Today was filled with mixed emotions. In 2019 they arrived to college filled with nervous anxiety. They were unsure, uncertain and some were unprepared, but the faces I witnessed today were of joy, confidence, hopefulness and pride. As their teacher, I felt a sense of accomplishment knowing that I played a small role in their academic development. Together, we navigated through many academic, social, financial, physical, mental and even legal challenges. Together we cried, laughed, travelled, performed and yes, got angry, but we didn’t give up on each other.
I am exceptionally proud of this my first four year graduating class of students. We arrived to MBU as strangers and are now departing as family. Though most of us will not remain to walk these hallowed hills, our legacies will stand the test of time. We have implemented programs, facilitated hard discussions and developed multiple opportunities for student collaborations that ushered in change. We also created space for many more voices to be heard and we are proud about it.
So today, I say congratulations to the MBU class of 2023 and leave you with these words: “The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and give you peace.” Go be great. Go make a difference. Go make change. I hope you know that I’ll be rooting for you even from a distance. Remember, you have a forever choral family who will support and encourage you to be the BEST you possible. All you have to do is…REACH OUT!
Much love,
Dr. Robertson
