Lyman Reed of New Orleans, Louisiana received his patent for "Method of and Apparatus for Shaving Ice" on March 9th of 1920. The motor would only start if the glass (48) weighed down the connectors (47) relaying the charge to the motor. When the glass was removed the brake shoe (44) would stop the device.
