Leaders of the farm credit system say that it remains financially sound, even as some farmers face tougher economic decisions.

The Farm Credit Administration reports total capital grew to more than $86 billion during the first quarter, while overall loan quality remained stable.

However, credit stress is showing signs of increasing. Nonperforming assets rose from a year ago, as producers contend with lower farm income.

Looking ahead, regulators say energy market volatility, drought concerns, and repayment capacity will be important factors to watch through the rest of the year.
