Franciscan University of Steubenville Education Department

Franciscan University of Steubenville Education Department Teaching is an art, not a science. A great knowledge of the subject matter doesn’t help your students if you don’t know how to present it in the classroom.

Education Department offers several different licensure programs, including: primary education, middle childhood, adolescent to young adult, and intervention specialist You also must know how to tap into your students’ lives and know how they think, how they struggle, where their passions lie, and how cultural influences affect them. Education majors at Franciscan University learn the art of teach

ing the whole person: opening minds with truth and forming hearts through a loving concern. In your classes you will learn how to bring the rich Catholic understanding of human dignity into every teaching situation, helping your students be formed in body, mind, and spirit. Franciscan offers four different licensure programs: early childhood, middle childhood, adolescent to young adult, and intervention specialist (mild/moderate needs). Each program deals with the challenges faced by that particular group and how to help those students. All of the programs cover the basics of running a class, as well as philosophies of education techniques and approaches, and how to navigate different school environments. Field experience begin early in the program, where you get to see put into action the theories you learn in the classroom. The many andvaried classrooms you observe through the years, along with student teaching during your final senior semester provide you a healthy base of experience to draw upon down the road. The total program includes 36 hours of class work in education classes, followed by the Teacher Education Program. This program is rigorous. It will require a serious commitment of your time and energy, but the rewards are well worth the hours spent. Our graduates leave prepared to face the challenges of education, and to guide their students to develop intellectually, morally, and spiritually.

Faith and Light Recap
4/27/2026
More than 20 students studying education, theology, and social work and members of the men’s rugby team came together to put on a final Faith and Light session at Holy Family Church on Sunday. Marybeth Coleman, wife of Dr. Coleman in the Math Department, was a founding member of the Steubenville chapter of Faith and Light. On Holy Thursday, she shared a final wish to have one more Faith and Light Church Service for those with special needs. In honor of Marybeth and her daughter, Emily, who was so looking forward to the service, we held the session on Sunday. It was a wonderful time of music, games, Bible stories, crafts, food, and fun, all geared to touch the hearts of the wonderful children in attendance. It was such a blessing to see Emily having such a great time as we all continue to lift the Coleman family in prayer in the upcoming days.

We're still reminiscing on how incredible our Education Majors Retreat was...what an
AMAZING day.

120 of us gathered to "Come to the Water," entering into the same living waters the woman at the well encountered-and it truly felt like a day of grace poured out. From Mass, to the music, to the trivia (seriously SO fun), to the talks, witnesses, and guided reflection...every part of the day pointed us back to what it means to live from that deep "reservoir" the Lord desires for us.

We're so grateful for Jake Khym and Fr.
Jonathan St. Andre for their powerful talks, Aniela for leading us in such beautiful praise and worship, JP and Sister Francis de Sales for being such fun trivia hosts, and the beautiful testimonies shared by Gia and St. Margaret Andrew. What a gift to enter into this together as a community, especially as we stepped into Holy Week.

Happy Easter, everyone! 💛

H/T to Anna Clare White for the amazing highlight reel! 👏🏻

Dr. Reister, professor of EDU 321: Early Childhood Inclusive Classroom, welcomed Instructor Michelle Wright—a long-time adjunct in Franciscan’s Theology Department—to speak with students about her experience as an educator, catechist, and parent of a child with learning differences. Michelle offered rich insight into the differences between Catholic and public education, shared practical wisdom on classroom management and strengths-based approaches, and beautifully emphasized the importance of relationship, trust-building, and honoring each child as uniquely created by God.

Drawing from both her professional and personal experiences, she reminded students of the call to ensure meaningful access to catechesis, sacramental preparation, and instruction for all learners. Michelle also shared about the beginning of her doctoral journey and a new ministry she is launching in the Pittsburgh area.

For those interested in Good Ground Family Ministry, please see the attached flyer for more information. Thank you, Michelle, for such a meaningful witness and for reminding us to truly love our neighbor in the students and families entrusted to us.
