Putting Exercise Physiology into Action

Our strength and conditioning students got hands-on experience with new technology in today's HSW 312 - Exercise Physiology lab with Assistant Professor Kevin Kirschbaum. Students explored velocity-based training using OVR Velocity to examine barbell speed, power and fatigue; vertical jump performance using Hawkin Dynamics Force Plates to compare jumping strategies and force production; and sprint performance using OVR Sprint Timing Gates to measure 40-meter sprint times and estimate horizontal power. These hands-on experiences bridge the gap between exercise science and real-world athletic performance!

Which glass is yours? What should you order? How do you keep a conversation going with someone you've just met?

SHSW students put their professional skills into practice at Monday's Etiquette Dinner, organized by our Student Success Center. Through a multi-course meal guided by Lyn Hulgan of Essential Details, LLC, students learned the nuances of dining etiquette, networking, conversation and confidence-building that can help them stand out in internships, interviews and future careers. Special thanks to our faculty and staff who served as table hosts during this evening and On Point Catering for a challenging–yet delicious–meal!

We are hiring a student success coach responsible for assisting School of Health Sciences and Wellness students achieve their academic and career goals. The coach will work one-on-one with students, as well as present information in classes and hold workshops and events. The coach will proactively and purposefully help students succeed with expertise in student learning and success strategies. This staff member will provide consistent and reliable information to communicate effectively with students, especially with regards to major and career exploration, strategies for gaining relevant experience, and preparation for graduate school and/or career success. Our health science and wellness students attended the HSW All-Major Mixer Wednesday to chat with faculty and staff about the various career paths including athletic training, physical therapy, health coaching, community health, employee wellness, food and nutrition, and strength and conditioning.
