Dick Thiel will trace the development of nascent wildlife management specifically within the Central Sands Region of Wisconsin, and as it relates to pioneer wildlife biologist, Wallace Grange and his wife, Hazel. Grange spent a career working in game management. He became the fledgling Wisconsin Conservation Department’s (now the DNR) first superintendent of game management and worked for the U.S. Biological Survey (now US Fish and Wildlife Service) as a biologist. Wallace and Hazel created the state’s largest game farm, which was later sold to the State of Wisconsin and is now Sandhill Wildlife Area.

You may have heard that an invasive fish species, the round goby, was recently found in Lake Joanis at Schmeeckle Reserve, one of our field stations.

CNR faculty, staff, and students are working with the Wisconsin DNR to monitor the population and better understand its potential impacts. If you catch a fish you believe is a round goby in Lake Joanis, please release it back into the lake. Several native fish species can look similar, and researchers want to avoid accidentally removing native fish.

Helpful posters identifying round gobies and sharing what to do if you catch one are posted around the lake. CNR Associate Professor of Fisheries Josh Raabe is involved with the monitoring effort and recently spoke with WAOW Channel 9 about the discovery. Watch the interview below to learn more.
