OSU School of Architecture

The School of Architecture (SoA) enjoys the full benefits of its unique combination of programs in Architecture (ARCH) and Architectural Engineering (AE).

Students entering the SoA will experience shared goals, values, and coursework between the programs. There are seventeen full-time professors on the teaching faculty, and every student will work with every faculty member in at least two courses over their student career. Architecture Students receive instruction in design studios, architecture history and theory courses, project management and bus

iness practice classes, and technical courses involving structural and environmental control systems. This well-rounded approach provides graduates with a special understanding of the design process and the profession of architecture. Students pursuing a degree in Architectural Engineering undertake more architectural design studios and advanced technical coursework than in any other Architecture Engineering program nationwide. Graduates of both the ARCH and AE programs enter the profession with a full appreciation of the complexities and cooperation required in the creation of architecture. The SoA also offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Architectural Design Studies degree. Students choose from three concentrations: Design Management and Leadership, Design Thinking and Communication, and Design, Culture, and Urban Studies. The School of Architecture is delighted to welcome Tasneem Tariq as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. An architect, researcher, and educator, Tariq specializes in climate-conscious design, sustainable development, urban heat mitigation, outdoor thermal comfort, and community-engaged decision-making. She brings more than 15 years of combined academic and professional experience, including over a decade of teaching environmental design.

Tariq earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in Architecture with a focus on sustainability from Pennsylvania State University. Her Department of Energy-funded doctoral research developed a decision-making framework that integrates computational environmental simulation with community perspectives to guide neighborhood-scale heat mitigation strategies. Her work has received numerous honors, including a Best Paper Award from the International Graduate Student Symposium, first prize at Penn State’s Graduate Exhibition, and recognition as a Three-Minute Thesis finalist. Her research has also been supported by several competitive fellowships and scholarships.

Prior to joining Oklahoma State University, Tariq served as a Teaching Instructor and Teaching Assistant at Penn State and previously as an Assistant Professor at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). In 2023, she received Penn State’s Harold F. Martin Graduate Assistant Outstanding Teaching Award, recognizing her commitment to student success.

Tariq holds B.Arch. and M.Arch. degrees from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and is a licensed architect in Bangladesh, a LEED Accredited Professional (BD+C), and a Phius Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC). She has also contributed to student leadership and service through roles with Penn State’s Graduate and Professional Student Association and the Stuckeman School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Additionally, Tariq is an acrylic painter and avid traveler who has explored more than 30 countries.

We look forward to her contributions at Oklahoma State University through teaching, research, collaboration, and mentorship.

The OSU School of Architecture is saddened by the passing of Professor Emeritus and former School Head Jim Knight, FAIA.

Bringing a wealth of experience in design and education, Jim joined the faculty at OSU in 1979 after previously serving as the graduate program director at the University of Illinois. Jim served as School Head from 1990-1995, leaving an important legacy that continues to impact our students, faculty, and design culture.

Born in Denver, Colorado, the son of Charles and Millicent (Savage) Knight, Jim graduated from Denver South High School; earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture from Oklahoma State University (OSU), then a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Illinois, Champaign.

Jim’s professional life centered around teaching architecture. In his younger life he won two traveling fellowships allowing him to travel and study throughout Europe. He and his family traveled in a van as he sketched and studied the great European architecture.

Before retiring he was inducted as a Fellow in the American Institute of Architecture. In retirement he designed the family gathering place, known as Thendara, outside Sappinero Colorado near Blue Mesa Reservoir. In 2007 he and his wife Pam moved to Montrose. In the Cobble Creek community, he used his talents volunteering on the Design Review Committee and designed the entrance to the Links at Cobble Creek. His design ideas and expertise were generously shared with friends and family. His hobbies included watercolor painting, remote control sail boats and airplanes, and golfing. Jim enjoyed socializing with his friends and family.

A celebration of life will be held on August 15th, from 2:00-4:00 pm at The Links at Cobble Creek Clubhouse in Montrose, CO.

Congratulations to Oscar Escamilla for receiving the King Student Medal from the Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC). Named in honor of the late Jonathan King, co-founder and first president of the ARCC, this award is given to one student per member school for innovation, integrity, and scholarship in architectural research.

Congratulations to our 2026 Bilbeisi Prize Winner Jacob Varnell and Honorable Mention Christian Neale. The Bilbeisi Prize was established by emeriti faculty Suzanne and Mohammed Bilbeisi to encourage, promote and reward the development of graphic communication capabilities. The competitive prize is awarded to an OSU School of Architecture student that demonstrates superior skills in hand sketching.

A big thanks to Moh and Suzanne Bilbeisi for creating and supporting the prize. Thanks also to our 2026 Bilbeisi Prize Jurors: Blake Mitchell (Chair), Bailey Brown, Jared Macken, Seung Ra, and Jay Yowell.

Congratulations to our 2026 Baumiller Prize Winners: Ethan Briix, Logan Lanphear, Braden Mcanear, Lakin Osmus, and Keegan Simpson!

George Baumiller was a universally admired professor who believed in our capacity to improve society through urban design. He taught a wide variety of courses during his 20 years at OSU. In design, he was a modernist that also valued levity and play. We continue to see these values in the work produced by our Urban Studio each year.

Congratulations to the 2026 Caudill Fellow Josue Monterroso.

The Caudill Fellowship is awarded to an outstanding graduate at the OSU School of Architecture through an external jury of design portfolios. The Caudill Fellowship supports significant studies of architectural and cultural value beyond the boundaries of North America. This award recognizes Bill Caudill’s pioneering spirit, his work ethic, and his commitment to design excellence. A graduate of the OSU School of Architecture, Bill Caudill was the 1985 recipient of the AIA Gold Medal--an occasion that initiated this prize.

As part of his fellowship, Josue has planned travel to Northern Europe. The jury noted that Josue's portfolio "conveyed a distinct design philosophy, exploring architecture not only as buildings but as experiences. The jury responded to the project’s exploration of how buildings can become 'icons or symbols for certain spaces,' emphasizing the power of architecture to shape identity and meaning within a place."

The OSU School of Architecture hosted a memorable alumni reception during the 2026 AIA Conference, set aboard a boat cruising San Diego Bay. With about 45 attendees, including alumni, faculty, staff, and friends, the evening offered a relaxed and scenic opportunity to reconnect, share stories, and celebrate our community in a beautiful place with wonderful weather. Thanks to all who attended. It was great to see you! And thanks to all those that make the SOA community so personally enjoyable and rewarding. We look forward to another great reception next year!
