Last week, a group of students from Dr. Colston’s Honors Citizen Science class partnered with the OSU Honors College to put together an event called Bug Bingo in order to promote the Campus Nature Challenge. Nick Oulette and David Berman from the OSU Landscaping and Horticulture departments led a guided tour around the Native Plants corridor, and students used iNaturalist to identify insects and plants on campus and upload them to the Campus Nature Challenge. The event brought OSU’s total number of observations from roughly 700 to over 1,100, with OSU finishing third in the world!
“Citizen science is most powerful when people see themselves as part of the process. Our students weren’t just documenting biodiversity—they were thinking creatively about how to invite the OSU community to notice nature, ask questions, and contribute to science alongside them,” says Dr. Nicole Colston, Teaching Professor, OSU Honors College.
