Wheat Disease Update – June 12 2026

Meriem Aoun, Small Grains Pathologist As wheat harvest progresses across Oklahoma, reports have emerged of s**t-contaminated grain being received at elevators in central Oklahoma. It has not been confirmed whether the issue is caused by loose s**t or stinking s**t (common bunt). Additionally, observations of “dark heads” have been reported in some wheat fields in certain varieties. These reports have prompted this update to highlight potential grain issues that may be encountered, as well as to outline considerations for affected grain....

I recently spoke with Reuters about some of the challenges Oklahoma and Southern Great Plains producers have been facing this season.

Between drought, high input costs, and difficult weather conditions, this has been a tough year for many operations.

Here’s the article if you’d like to read it:

Scott Irlbeck crouched in a field of stunted wheat plants in a parched stretch of West Texas and slipped his hand into a crack wide enough to swallow it.

SUNUP got a behind-the-scenes look at this year’s wheat crop at the OSU Agriculture Lahoma Field Day. 🌾

Tune in this weekend as Amanda De Oliveira Silva, OSU Extension small grains specialist, shares how wheat is progressing across Oklahoma and what producers are seeing in the field ahead of harvest.

⚠ A quick update: the May 22 wheat plot tour in Miami has been canceled due to the heavy rainfall we've received over the past hours — a problem Oklahoma rarely complains about.

This also marks the close of the 2026 wheat plot tour season across the state. Every handshake, field-side chat, and "well, I hope we get rain" conversation meant a lot.

To Oklahoma's wheat producers — thank you for your continued support, especially in a season that hasn't been easy.
Here's hoping the skies cooperate from here on out so we can get this crop in the bin. Best of luck out there!
