October 22, 1948 - On this day in business history, In-N-Out Burger opened its first location in Baldwin Park, California.
Founded by Harry and Esther Snyder, it was California's first drive-thru burger stand. In a space roughly 100 square feet, In-N-Out revolutionized fast food by using a two-way speaker Harry invented. Before then, burger stands had carhops deliver food. At In-N-Out, burgers were made-to-order using fresh ingredients. It operates the same way today- everything made-to-order, no freezers, no microwaves, no heat lamps, no frills. In-N-Out has been listed as one of the top 10 places to work in the United States. Employees are paid well, receive benefits and earn vacation time; the average yearly manager salary is $160k. They have been intentional about their growth and have just over 400 locations in only 8 states. They also have opted not to go public. All of this has helped them build a loyal following and maintain the quality that has made them a West Coast favorite.
