College of Engineering & Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University The College aims to provide students with a solid foundation that prepares them to adapt successfully throughout their careers to advances in technology.

Founded in 1960, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences is home to seven academic departments: Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Technology and Society. Hands-on laboratory courses, the undergraduate internship program, and the senior design project provide practical experience in engineering that complements theoretical training. As of 2012, the college is home to about 2,500 undergraduate students, 1,800 graduate students, and a faculty of 148 engineers and applied scientists. It boasts over 18,000 alumni.

Last week Wolfie visited the Maker's Space so that Joseph Schurz, supervisor of CEAS Support Shops, and Leana Grotz, collaborative space technician, could take a 3D scan of him, refine his likeness and work on printing his "mini me" with their 11 Bambu 3D printers.

Wolfie stopped by the Space again. This time to give his thumbs up, as he accepted the first of the statues to be displayed at the Wolf's Den.

Students can participate in the Photo Scavenger Hunt: Spirited Edition from now until Sunday, October 18th.

This is organized by Student Engagement and Activities, Orientation and Transition Programs, in partnership with Mach 1 Innovation Hub.

Meet Katherine Skinner, a new associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. 🌊🤖

She’s currently teaching a lecture course focusing on the application and challenges that come with marine robotics, spanning marine robot design, dynamics, planning and controls, and sensing and perception.

Her love for underwater robotics was influenced by where she grew up. “I grew up on Long Island, surrounded by water. I grew up fishing, and being able to combine my engineering coursework with being out on the water was a really great opportunity.”

For Walter Benitez, economics major, and Kevin Chen, computer science major, their URECA projects began with questions that had been forming long before they came to Stony Brook University.

Though their research took them in different directions, both students utilized URECA opportunities to transform personal experiences into applicable research.

They are mentored by Daniene Byrne, SUNY PRODiG+ Fellow (2024-2026) in the Department of Technology, AI and Society.

Congratulations to Paolo Celli who was promoted to Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering! 🎉

His research focuses on solid and structural mechanics, structural dynamics and wave mechanics. He is a recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Professorships for Teaching Award, and was a Discovery Prize 2025 Finalist. He earned his doctorate from the University of Minnesota, MS in mechanical engineering from Politecnico di Torino, and his BS in mechanical engineering from Università Politecnica delle Marche.

October URECA Researcher Spotlight: Amy Chen! 🌿🤖🎉

Meet Amy Chen, an information systems major and environmental studies minor in the WISE Honors program! She is using artificial intelligence to revolutionize environmental research.

Mentored by Guanyu Huang (SoMAS) and supported by SUNY SOAR, she built an ozone bioindicator garden and developed a Convolutional Neural Network to automatically detect and map ozone injury on plants.

Chen continued with her research after the summer program concluded, and went on to present at the 106th American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas where she won a best student poster award. This past August, she presented in Boulder, Colorado at the National Ozone Garden Network Conference. Currently Chen is working with her research group on preparing a manuscript on U-Net segmentation of ozone injury across four bioindicator species. Her innovative project will also serve as her WISE senior thesis.

The Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University consists of approximately 30 faculty, 6 staff, nearly 800 graduate students, and over 600 undergraduate students, and offers a flexible and intellectually diverse undergraduate degree program, together with graduate degree programs with specialties in computational applied mathematics, computational biology, statistics, operations research, and quantitative finance. It also offers MS and PhD degrees in Data Science (DAS) in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science.
