A full house for the Marie Colvin Distinguished Lecture Series!

Thank you to Evan Gershkovich for joining us and sharing his story as the first American journalist jailed in Russia since the Cold War. From his 2023 arrest to nearly 500 days in prison, Gershkovich reflected on his experiences and complex relationship with Russia, as explored in his acclaimed memoir, This Cursed Beautiful Land.

📣 Alumni Shoutout!

Congratulations to class of 2026 graduate Miles Reese as he begins his new role as a Reporter for WSLS 10 in Roanoke, Virginia!

Seeing our graduates land their dream jobs right out the door is the most fulfilling part of what we do at SoCJ. When asked how SoCJ helped prepare Miles for his new role, he shared:

“A major thing that SoCJ instilled in me when pursuing a career in TV News was to compete with myself to get better. What I mean by that is being able to look at my own work with critical and honest eyes so that the next thing I produced was ten times better. Practice makes progress.”

The workshops provide students valuable opportunities to gain real-world insights on the skills needed to break into their desired fields.

From scrolling to storytelling 🎥📱

Last week, SoCJ lecturer J.D. Allen and SoCJ alum Julia Heming hosted “Create, Connect, Credibility: Your Social Media Workshop” as part of the Stony Brook Pre-College Summer Program!

Throughout the week, students explored how to create engaging content for social media while mastering essential skills, including research, interviewing, and fact-checking, that college admissions officers and future employers value. Most importantly, they discovered how to use social media as a tool to share their authentic voices.

Shoutout to the fantastic students whose creativity and enthusiasm made this week a memorable experience!

Exciting news for SoCJ! 🏆

The Robert W. Greene Institute for High School Journalists has been honored with the Press Club of Long Island’s inaugural PCLI Spotlight Award! This award recognizing the program’s outstanding impact on the future of journalism on Long Island.

The Greene Institute was established in 2009 in honor of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bob Greene. The six-day summer program brings the classroom to life by guiding students through conducting interviews, writing impactful stories, and producing news broadcasts.

Round of applause to our wonderful faculty and staff who have helped make the Greene program a success!

Some snapshots from Journalism Without Walls (JWW) Berlin 2026! ✈️

Our SoCJ students are gaining invaluable hands-on experience in foreign reporting as they write stories, produce videos, and immerse themselves in the local culture during two weeks in Germany.

Journalism Without Walls is funded by the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting at Stony Brook University.
