Our MHA students Kari Mygland and Julia Tuohy joined Executive Director Lisa Benz-Scott and Associate Director for Academic and Student Affairs, Lakshmi Ramsoondar-Ahmad, at the Anthony Red Show FUNd Run as part of this year’s Health • Community • Service initiative.

Beyond supporting a great cause, the event provided an opportunity to connect, build relationships, and grow professionally. As one student shared, following the advice to “sign up for events—you never know who you’ll meet” has made each experience a valuable networking opportunity.

Congratulations to Gabriella Pandolfelli, PhD, MPH, on being selected to serve on the AIHC National IPE Organizational Models Survey 3.0 Task Force!

As a member of this national initiative, Dr. Pandolfelli will help examine how academic institutions across the country organize, sustain and advance interprofessional education (IPE). Her work will contribute to survey development, data analysis, interpretation and the national dissemination of findings.

We’re proud to have Dr. Pandolfelli represent Stony Brook and contribute her expertise to advancing interprofessional education on a national scale.

Meet Aaliyah Schwenderman-Randall, M.A., a PhD student in Population Health and a Dr. W. Burghardt Turner Fellow in Stony Brook University’s Program in Public Health.

Aaliyah’s research focuses on the structural and social determinants contributing to disparities in cardiovascular disease and breast cancer outcomes among Black women. Her goal is to develop culturally responsive interventions that promote earlier risk detection and help reduce disparities in health outcomes.

For Aaliyah, public health research is about connecting rigorous science with the needs of the communities it serves.

“My long-term goal is to conduct research that bridges rigorous science and community needs.”

As a Turner Fellow, Aaliyah is building on her commitment to community-centered research while connecting with scholars and leaders who share her dedication to improving the health and well-being of historically underserved communities.

We’re proud to celebrate Aaliyah and the important work she is doing as part of the Stony Brook Program in Public Health.

As students return to the classroom, prioritizing key public health protocols is essential to reduce the transmission of illness and foster a supportive campus. By committing to these evidence-based practices, we strengthen the entire school community:

•Implement Symptom Management:Protect shared spaces by staying home when feeling unwell. Rigorous hand hygiene—washing for 20 seconds with soap and water—remains a foundational measure.

•Encourage Preventive Measures:Consider appropriate personal protective equipment and maintain up-to-date vaccinations to enhance individual and collective immunity against common communicable diseases.

•Support Holistic Health:Recognizing that physical and mental health are connected, we promote a culture where seeking mental health support is encouraged, creating a safer psychological environment.
