A healthy learning environment is vital for academic success and overall well-being. As students return to the classroom, prioritizing key public health protocols is essential to reduce the transmission of illness and foster a supportive campus. By committing to these evidence-based practices, we strengthen the entire school community:

•Implement Symptom Management:Protect shared spaces by staying home when feeling unwell. Rigorous hand hygiene—washing for 20 seconds with soap and water—remains a foundational measure.

•Encourage Preventive Measures:Consider appropriate personal protective equipment and maintain up-to-date vaccinations to enhance individual and collective immunity against common communicable diseases.

•Support Holistic Health:Recognizing that physical and mental health are connected, we promote a culture where seeking mental health support is encouraged, creating a safer psychological environment.

•Foster a Community of Care:Every individual’s commitment to these health guidelines contributes to the safety of others. Let’s work together to make this school year prioritize health, wellness, and safety for everyone.

“I grew up in an environment where basic health needs were lacking. Individuals would get treated, but the disease always stayed.”

Growing up in a Tibetan refugee settlement, Kunchok Dorjee, MPH ’10, MD, PhD, witnessed the devastating impact of infectious diseases firsthand. That experience inspired him to pursue a career in public health, leading him to Stony Brook University as a Fulbright Scholar.

Today, Dr. Dorjee is a physician-epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University leading ground-breaking community health initiatives—including a project that reduced tuberculosis rates by over 80% in the very boarding schools he attended as a child.

We are so proud of Dr. Dorjee’s dedication to translational research, community-level care, and giving back to his homeland.
