Viktoria Skobodzinski earned her B.A. in Environmental Studies and Ecosystems and Human Impact and her M.A. in Marine Conservation & Policy (MCP) from the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University in 2025. Her capstone project, “Assessing the No Discharge Zone in the Peconic Estuary,” focused on boating waste, infrastructure, and compliance, resulting in recommendations to strengthen local protections.

Today, she works as a Vegetable Program Assistant with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County (CCE), supporting agriculture research and working with growers across Eastern Long Island.

She credits the MCP program’s focus on research, science communication, and community engagement for helping her transition into her current role and says the diverse backgrounds of MCP students and faculty were her favorite parts of the program.

This summer, the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences supported a faculty trip to the Turkana Basin Institute (TBI) for Drs. Oliver Shipley (MAR) and Shelby McClelland (SUS). They were joined by TBI's most recently sponsored hire, Dr. Daniel Griffith from the Stony Brook University Ecology and Evolution. The faculty were provided a first hand experience across TBI Turkwell and Ileret campuses with the hope of seeding novel, sustainable research. These topics will include sustainable agricultural systems, historical and modern lake ecology, and grassland ecology, which all provide a forward looking perspective on life throughout the basin.
