Climate innovation took center stage at the latest Stony Brook Southampton Dialogues.

President Andrea Goldsmith recently hosted M. Sanjayan, CEO of The New York Climate Exchange, at Chancellors Hall for a conversation about the future of climate innovation and the work underway at The Exchange.

Anchored by Stony Brook, The New York Climate Exchange is developing a 250,000-square-foot climate campus on Governors Island that will bring together scientists, entrepreneurs and policymakers to advance research, urban resilience, disaster planning and clean energy workforce development.

The conversation explored how The Exchange can help move climate research into real-world solutions and prepare the next generation of climate leaders.

A successful pilot program at Stony Brook is becoming a systemwide initiative across SUNY - The State University of New York.

Stony Brook’s Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science is expanding the SUNY Research Leadership Academy for the 2026-27 academic year, bringing communication, leadership and stakeholder engagement training to researchers across the SUNY system.

The inaugural cohort included 33 researchers working in fields from artificial intelligence and nanotechnology to climate sustainability and biomedical engineering. Now, more SUNY researchers will have the opportunity to strengthen these skills and build connections with colleagues across campuses.

Nearly 400 new doctoral students are beginning their studies at this fall, marking the start of an important new chapter in their academic and professional lives.

At our inaugural Doctoral Convocation, university leaders and fellow scholars shared candid stories about rejection, uncertainty, failure and perseverance. Their message was clear: A doctoral journey is challenging, but students do not have to navigate it alone.

Welcome to the newest cohort of doctoral candidates beginning their work at SBU! We can’t wait to see all that you achieve.

Perched atop Stony Brook University’s Health Sciences Center, the Quantum Watchtower may look like something out of the future. The work happening inside is helping make that future possible.

Inside this 375-square-foot lab, Stony Brook researchers are developing the technology needed to extend quantum networking beyond fiber-optic cables. Using precision optics, researchers are working to send entangled photons through open air between SUNY - The State University of New York at Stony Brook, Brookhaven National Laboratory and, eventually, Yale University.

The goal is a new generation of quantum networks that could enable more secure communications and help protect sensitive information while connecting quantum technologies across long distances.
