Stony Brook University Music Department Music Scholarship and Performance in an Interdisciplinary University Setting

The character of Stony Brook's music department is largely due to the nature of our faculty. Faculty are chosen not only for their stature as performers, scholars, and composers, but also for their rapport with students, their ability to work cooperatively with their colleagues, and their commitment to the values of the department. The rapid growth and success of the Stony Brook music department is due to the vision of some of our founding faculty: Billy Jim Layton, our first chairman (now retired) and the late David Lewin, our first director of graduate studies and principal architect of our graduate program. The character and spirit of the faculty owes a great debt to some gifted teachers who are no longer with us, most notably Bülent Arel, who built our first Electronic Music Studio, and Samuel Baron, whose combination of gentleness and musical vision inspired his flute students and his fellow faculty alike.

Photos from Dr. Ruth Opara’s (Columbia U) recent CMS Colloquium here at SBU! On September 9, Dr. Ruth Opara delivered a colloquium in the department of music entitled Sounding Freedom: Afrobeats Women and the Politics of Reimagining Africa, which examined how African women turn Afrobeats and adjacent transatlantic African popular sounds into unexpected spaces for negotiating freedom. Through Angélique Kidjo’s “Afirika” (2002), Yemi Alade and Sauti Sol’s “Africa” (2016), Nneka’s “Africans” (2005), and Little Simz’s “Woman” (2021), Opara explored what becomes possible when women artists use popular music to defend, criticize, remember, and reimagine Africa.

Check out some photos from the recent Humanities Institute event featuring our own Professor Benjamin Tausig. Professor Benjamin Tausig (Critical Music Studies) recently participated in a lively panel responding to the 2026 book “The Minjung Art Movement: Decolonization and Democracy in South Korea” by Professor Sohl Lee (Art History & Criticism). Prof. Tausig was joined by Professors E. K. Tan (English) and Nerissa Balce (Asian and Asian American Studies). The room was packed (if you look closely, you might spot other Music Dept. faculty and graduate students in the crowd), and discussion continued across the hall and into the reception!
