Stony Brook University began its recycling program in 1987 in response to the New York State Solid Waste Management Act of 1988 in an attempt to reduce the amount of waste produced by Long Island by 50%. Recycling was the vehicle for this change. The program started off focusing on collecting paper and cardboard. Eventually the University continued to evolve and expand the collected recyclable mat

erials to include all of the following; paper, bottles, cans, paper, plastic (types #1-7), scrap metals, batteries, tires , motor oil, wood debris/yard waste, office equipment, clothing, construct ion and demolition debris, e-waste/batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, wood pallets, mattresses/box springs, residential furniture , mercury , vegetable oil/dining hall grease, printer toner/ink cartridges , carpet, ceiling tiles and kitchen waste.

We are now in week 5 of RecycleMania! Remember to recycle your bottles/cans/paper and plastics anywhere on campus! Additionally if you have any old/broken electronics, they are accepted in any of the three-bin units located in academic buildings and the SAC.

Mendelsohn Quad is currently taking the lead in RecycleMania followed by Tabler Quad in 2nd place and H-Quad in 3rd! We are about halfway through the national recycling competition! Q: I have some old batteries, can I throw them in the trash?
A: No, batteries must properly be recycled. On campus you can recycle used batteries in any of the 2-bin units around campus under the label "E-Waste".
