🔎 FACULTY RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT
Meet Assistant Professor Alex Diamond!
🌎 How does state power take root in communities where multiple forms of authority already exist?
Drawing on three years of ethnographic research in a Colombian village experiencing conflict between guerrilla and state authority, Professor Diamond examines state formation as a process of relationship building.
His research explores how farmers seeking to replace coca cultivation with legal crops organized to build their own roads. These shared efforts brought community members together, created local representatives, and connected communities with state officials who could provide resources and machinery.
At the same time, community representatives maintained relationships with guerrilla commanders around other collective needs.
The result? A closer look at how roads, community organizing, and relationships between local leaders and government officials can shape the development of state power.
