The students whose final projects are gathered in this slideshow on Boccaccio's tales were part of “From Baghdad to Florence: Medieval Short Stories Across Cultures” (ILCS 1102) a pilot course taught by Andrea Celli in Spring 2026 as part of the Italian studies program. The course has a strong creative component, through which it aims to engage students with medieval short stories and frame tale collections as part of a cross-cultural genre of storytelling. Throughout the term, students were asked to rewrite and adapt tales to different media. The first and the last slides in this selection of drawings include works that are not directly related to Boccaccio and are meant to give a sense of the broader scope of the course. There are variations in the quality of these works, but the student’s dedication to the creative process was an unexpected source of wonderment and gratefulness for the instructor.

We are very grateful to alumnus Nicholas Morizio for his generous support of UConn students! This wonderful contribution makes us hopeful that more Italian-American alumni and alumnæ will consider investing in the cultural development of our community as well — supporting programs that help future generations explore who we are, where we belong, and what we can become.

Morizio credits UConn for helping him find his path in life
