Mingyu Qiao, assistant professor of innovation and entrepreneurship in the UConn Department of Nutritional Sciences, has received a $1.875 million grant from the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels and Feedstocks Office to turn seaweed into a replacement for palm oil and other medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) like coconut oil.

Because palm oil is derived from a tropical plant, the United States currently relies on imports to meet 100% of its demand for this critical platform chemical across the food, cosmetics, industrial lubricants, and plasticizer sectors creating significant supply chain vulnerabilities.

To prevent heat-related illnesses in athletes, coaches should increase rest breaks, ramp up the intensity of practice gradually at the start of the season, and make sure players are hydrated, said Douglas Casa, professor and chief executive of the Korey Stringer Institute at the University of Connecticut, which focuses on preventing severe injuries and sudden deaths among athletes, military personnel and laborers.

The student body will include about 4,500 first-year students starting at Storrs, earning their place in a competitive application pool of about 60,000 people from around the globe. About 1,900 other first-year students will be enrolled at the regional campuses.

Dr. Rahul Kumar, an incoming clinical professor in the Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science, will serve as the new director of the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (CVMDL).

The CVMDL is housed in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR).

Kumar is an accomplished veterinary diagnostic leader with over a decade of experience in the field

After 36 years of dedicated service to the UConn Department of Animal Science, Professor Steven A. Zinn will retire on September 1.

Throughout his distinguished career at UConn, Dr. Zinn has made countless contributions to the department, college, and university through teaching and advising, research, service, and leadership. Just as importantly, he has been a valued colleague, mentor, and friend to so many throughout the UConn community.
