The Neag School of Education stands out as a major contributor to instructional and research excellence at the University of Connecticut, one of the nation’s leading public higher education institutions. With academic departments dedicated to educational leadership, educational psychology, and curriculum and instruction, the Neag School also offers a five-year integrated bachelor’s / master’s program in teacher education and a one-year, post-baccalaureate teacher education program in critical shortage areas. Some highlights from our Scholarship Celebration, held this past weekend in the UConn Student Union ballroom. 🌟📜

We were thrilled to see so many students and their families, our faculty and staff, and many of the generous donors who support our scholarships in attendance on Sunday. In the 2025-2026 academic year, the Neag School supported over 400 students with more than $580,000 in scholarships.

“Scholarships have an immense impact on our students, who go on to impactful careers throughout Connecticut, as well as across the nation and abroad,” Dean Jason Irizarry said. “We instill in our students our mission of improving educational and social systems to be more effective, equitable, and just for all. And they continue to carry out that mission after they graduate.”

UConn School of Social Work student Sean Excellent wants to help young Black men find a stronger sense of identity, purpose, and well-being — something he knows can be difficult to navigate alone.

Now a second-year master’s student concentrating in Individuals, Groups, and Families, Excellent is preparing to offer that support to others as a future social worker. Along the way, he is finding guidance of his own through UConn’s new Black Male Mental Health Professional Mentoring Program. 🧠 👨🏿

A joint initiative of the UConn School of Social Work and the UConn Neag School of Education, the program pairs graduate students with mental health professionals committed to supporting Black men and boys. Through mentorship, training, and professional development, it aims to help students establish lasting careers while strengthening a network of practitioners serving the Greater Hartford community.
