Participants are gaining hands-on experience with surveying equipment and learning how to measure distances, determine road crown, check grades, take elevations, and calculate slope—essential skills for maintaining safe and effective local roads.

CT Safety Academy and Traffic Signal Technician Certificate Program participants came together in Farmington today for a dual-credit Roadway Lighting workshop. This course focuses on pedestrian lighting design, a proven safety countermeasure, and gives participants hands-on experience designing lighting solutions for crosswalks and other pedestrian crossings.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is activating automated speed cameras in select highway work zones beginning June 1 as part of its Know the Zone program to improve safety for roadway workers and motorists. The warning period runs through July 5, with fines beginning July 6 for repeat violations and excessive speeding in active work zones.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has expanded Safety Patrol hours for the busy summer travel season, providing motorists with extended roadside assistance coverage to help keep traffic moving and improve safety on Connecticut highways. The Safety Patrol offers free services such as flat tire changes, jump-starts, and assistance with disabled vehicles, while also supporting incident response and roadway clearance efforts.

Yesterday marked Day 2 of the Confined Space Competent Person Road Master Program workshop! Participants spent the day outdoors taking part in hands-on training activities focused on safe confined space entry procedures, equipment use, hazard recognition, and rescue operations.

This week, as we recognize and celebrate public works professionals during National Public Works Week, the APWA New England Chapter honored Tom Modzelewski, Director of Public Works for the Town of Ellington, CT, with the prestigious “John Kiley” Member of the Year Award.

Tom, a graduate of the Transportation Leadership Program (TLP Cohort #7), is a true asset to Connecticut’s public works community. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to service continue to make a lasting impact across the region.

Today, Road Master Program participants are in Manchester with T2 Instructor Adam Drummond for Day 1 of the 1.5-day Confined Space Competent Person workshop.

Participants are reviewing OSHA confined space requirements, entry procedures, hazard recognition, and rescue protocols while gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard confined space equipment during a live field demonstration.
