A simple decision to join a bone marrow donor registry during college led to a life-changing experience for PCOM Georgia medical student Kiera Curry (DO ’29).

On the final day of her first year of medical school, Curry learned she was a potential match for a young child in need of a bone marrow transplant. After additional testing confirmed an 8/8 HLA match, she traveled to Oklahoma City to undergo the donation procedure.

Now in her second year of medical school, Curry is sharing her experience to raise awareness about the importance of donor registration and the potential impact of a single decision.

“You would never know that doing such a small act, such as swabbing your cheek, could ultimately save someone's life,” Curry said.

Research into GLP-1 medications is beginning to look beyond their established uses, including a potential connection to reduced alcohol consumption and cravings.

Kimberly L. Barefield, PharmD, MHA, director of interprofessional education and professor of pharmacy practice at PCOM Georgia, discusses the early findings and ongoing research into GLP-1 medications and Alcohol Use Disorder.

She also explains what patients should understand about combining alcohol with these medications, including how drinking may affect certain side effects.

PCOM Georgia recently welcomed representatives from 27 different residency programs to campus for the annual Residency Fair and panel event hosted by the Office of Student Affairs.

Students had the opportunity to speak directly with program representatives, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of the opportunities available as they prepare for the next stage of their medical education.

Christy Dinkins, EdD, director of campus and community partnerships at PCOM Georgia, describes her approach to change leadership as “leading the change from within.”

Over the past four years, that philosophy has helped shape initiatives focused on youth engagement, community partnerships, professional development and mentorship. Her work includes growing Opportunities Academy, launching the Community Engagement Internship program and creating the “Lead the Change” course, which is now in its fourth cycle with more than 100 participants.

“I listen. I ask people what they need to succeed and build programs around those insights,” Dr. Dinkins said.

Go behind the scenes with one of our PCOM Alumni, Ayesha Khanduri, DO ‘19, MS/Biomed ‘15, during her day as a hospice and palliative medicine physician as we celebrate Women in Medicine Month!

“I was drawn to the specialty because I have cared for my grandparents who were both on hospice care when I was in medical school and residency,” she shared, “I experienced what it was like being a caregiver and caring for someone towards the end of their life as a family member.”

On her advice for future women in medicine, she reflects, "Medicine will ask a lot of you, but it will also give so much back. You will grow, you will be challenged, and you will have moments that remind you exactly why you chose this path. Always believe in yourself - you will always be your biggest cheerleader!"
