Dr. Huo Lu, professor of anatomy and neuroscience, started running in 2016 when a group of DO students convinced him to run a PCOM-sponsored 5K with no training. Now, he’s completed three half marathons and his first full marathon! 👟🏅

As a member of the PCOM Georgia Old Peachtree Blaze 5K planning committee, he offered perspective on his running journey and what to expect from this year’s race. ⬇️

“One of the benefits [of running] is an opportunity for faculty to know our students and also for them to know us outside the classroom,” Dr. Lu shared. Running has also improved his health, helping him feel more energetic in his everyday life.

After completing three half marathons, Dr. Lu learned quickly that a full marathon was “a different monster.” By 30K, he was ready to quit, but everything changed when he reached the finish line: “I feel that I really accomplished something!”

So what should people know about this year’s PCOM Georgia Old Peachtree Blaze 5K?

Pacing is key! This year’s new route starts downhill before ending uphill, so Dr. Lu recommends saving some energy for that final push. He compares it to the first two years of the DO program, where learning to “find the proper pace” can help you make it to the finish line.

Adam Eugene Davis (DO ’28) is exploring a significant challenge in prostate cancer care: understanding why the disease may return following a radical prostatectomy and how clinicians might better predict recurrence.

His research examines biological processes and genetic markers associated with recurrence, work that could contribute to a deeper understanding of patient risk and more individualized treatment strategies.

“Studying these pathways and how they function within the cancer itself could allow for more comprehensive prognoses for patients and more tailored treatment strategies,” Davis said.

Now completing clinical rotations at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Davis continues to pursue his growing interest in urology while building on research he began early in medical school.
