In the late 1980s, the East German Film Studio DEFA produced a series of environmentalist films. A prominent example is Rolf Losansky’s 1989 film Farewell Disco, which symbolically addresses the ecological and social problems of (East) German society. In addition to experimental film sequences and sharp humor, Farewell Disco is perfused with criticism of an energy policy that benefits the state but leaves deep scars in the social fabric. The film is an appeal for reassessing the tenets of democracy, and finding meaning in respect, inclusiveness, and engagement.

Film screening on October 27 at 7pm in SCI 199. Lecture by Dr. Mariana Ivanova on October 28 at 3pm in SCI 199.

This event is organized by the German Studies section of the Modern Languages and Literatures Department and is made possible by the generous support of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington, DC, as part of their “Germany on Campus” initiative, along with the Environmental Studies Program and the Lang Center at Swarthmore College.
