Sweet Briar College

Sweet Briar College Sweet Briar College is a liberal arts and sciences college for women in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. They’re generous and determined.

We’ve been making history since our earliest days. Our alumnae have been political leaders, doctors and veterinarians, scientists, innovators and disruptors. They’re community leaders and decision makers. Sweet Briar College’s campus in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is more than just a beautiful place. Our 2,840 acres of farmlands and vineyards, forest and wetlands, meadows and histor

ic buildings are a learning lab that helps students write their own future. Our women’s leadership core curriculum is innovative and energizing. When our students graduate, they are persuasive communicators who know how to think on their feet and bring people together. No matter what they study or where they go from here, Sweet Briar women are prepared to lead. We’re a family of faculty, coaches, alumnae and friends who support and encourage students and each other. With an average class size of eight students, students lead research, ask questions and forge supportive relationships with faculty that can last for decades. Our students have a favorite rallying cry: “There’s nothing that you cannot do.” And that’s how you make history.

This summer, Mackenzie Autry ’27 sought to determine whether Sweet Briar's campus has suitable habitat for eastern wild turkeys for her honors research project. Throughout the program, Mackenzie completed field surveys and data collection on campus in addition to using published scholarly literature to explore her hypothesis that the habitat exists on campus, but lacks sufficient functional connections between patches, impacting turkey lifecycle completion. Under the mentorship of Dean Lisa Powell, Mackenzie’s study used a stratified transect design with 145 survey points across forest, agriculture, transition, and managed timber habitats, scored using a seven-variable rapid assessment instrument modeled after Habitat Suitability Index protocols from the literature. Points were classified by functional habitat type using a best-match approach and a strict actual-match approach that required all seven variables to meet defined thresholds simultaneously. The majority of all points failed the strict actual-match criteria, with canopy closure and human disturbance as the primary limiting variables. Travel corridor habitat was also underrepresented. The data and Mackenzie’s observations suggest that intra-campus connectivity between required habitat patches, rather than overall habitat quality, is the primary factor limiting turkey occupancy at Sweet Briar.
