On Wednesday, May 13, Los Angeles Mission College celebrated the opening of its new Student-Parent Hub with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by campus and District leadership, community partners, student-parents, and faculty & staff.

The Student-Parent Hub was created to support parenting students by providing a welcoming space where they can study, access resources, and spend time with their children while on campus. The space connects student-parents with support services and information designed to help them balance their academic and family responsibilities.

The event also celebrated the launch of NEST (Navigating Education and Support for Thriving Families), a new $1.4 million initiative supported by the ECMC Foundation. Through partnerships with five colleges, including four within the Los Angeles Community College District, NEST will help expand access to childcare resources, benefits navigation, and other support services for student-parents.

The Student-Parent Hub and NEST initiative supports the college and District’s ongoing efforts to expand resources and support services for parenting students.

Meet LACCD Student of the Week Jazelle Solis

For Jazelle Solis, studying sociology at Los Angeles Mission College has been about more than earning a degree—it has helped her become more confident and connect with others.

A 19-year-old student from Pacoima, Jazelle graduated from Vaughn International Studies Academy in 2024 and is close to completing her associate degree for transfer in sociology. She chose the major because of her interest in understanding people’s experiences and perspectives.

“I really enjoy working with people and learning about their backgrounds,” Jazelle says. “I want to get a deeper understanding of society and what it looks like from different perspectives.”

Jazelle plans to transfer to a four-year university to continue studying sociology and eventually hopes to earn a master’s degree and work as a social worker or therapist.

At Mission College, she has found support through TRIO, CCRH, and Puente, where she connected with counselor Rosa Moreno and other mentors.

“My top three people are my mom, Joanna Meza from Outreach, Dean Vanessa Hernandez, and Rosa Moreno,” Jazelle says. “They’ve always been there for me and helped guide me through my journey.”

Jazelle also works on campus in the TRIO program, supporting other students while pursuing her own academic goals.

“In high school I was really antisocial,” Jazelle says. “Being a sociology major helped me become more social and get to know people.”

She says learning to ask questions and seek help has been an important part of her college experience.

Outside of school, Jazelle enjoys baking and experimenting with new recipes.
For students considering sociology, she encourages them to focus on building relationships and connecting with others. “Networking and getting to know people brings a lot of opportunities,” she says. “It really opens your horizon.”

The Los Angeles Mission College Women’s Tennis team has won the 3C2A State Championship, defeating Sierra College 5–4 at Ventura College to secure the first team state title in the College’s history.

The championship caps a historic season for the program, which finished the regular season undefeated and advanced through regional and state competition to secure the title.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for our student-athletes and coaching staff,” said Armida Ornelas, Ph.D., President of Los Angeles Mission College. “To bring home the first state championship in our College’s history is a milestone that reflects the hard work and dedication of this team.”

In the final, the Eagles built an early lead after doubles, but Sierra rallied in singles to take a 4–3 advantage. Genesis Nochez evened the score with a second-set tiebreak win, setting up the deciding match. The title came down to the final singles point, where Josilyn Rivera defeated Sierra’s Autumn Holmes in a third-set tiebreaker to secure the championship.

“Winning the final point is an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life,” said Rivera. “[Holmes] is an incredible player; she's so tough. I found something in that tiebreaker and I'm so happy to get it done for my team.”

“It's a dream and it's a miracle,” said Head Coach Joe Cascione. “Our team never gave up and they stuck together, which is the most important thing. I'm so proud of these players and I'm so happy for Mission College.”

The team received multiple postseason honors, with Head Coach Joe Cascione named the 2026 Western State Conference Coach of the Year. Priscilla Grinner, America Fragoso, and Alitzel Ortega Partida earned Singles First Team honors, while Amy Nghiem and Josilyn Rivera were named to the Second Team. In doubles, Nghiem/Fragoso and Rivera/Partida earned First Team honors, with Jaelyn Rivera/Grinner earning Second Team recognition.

The title marks a rapid rise for the tennis program, capturing the state championship in just its fifth year.

Meet LACCD Student of the Week Andy Gonzales

For Andy Gonzales, life at Los Angeles Mission College moves quickly. As a full-time student, a forward on the men’s soccer team, and student worker in the L.A. College Promise program, his days are packed with responsibilities that require discipline and careful planning.

Balancing athletics, academics, and work has been one of the biggest lessons of his first year. “It gets really hard and stressful when you have lots of things going on,” Gonzales says. “You just have to manage your time and try your best. Don’t say you’ll do something later because then you’ll fall behind.”

Gonzales graduated from San Fernando Senior High School, where he was also a student-athlete. Now majoring in Business Administration, Gonzales hopes to eventually transfer to a four-year university after earning his associate degree. His dream school is UC Berkeley, where he would like to continue studying business and build the foundation for a future career as an entrepreneur.

In addition to academics and athletics, Gonzales works as a student employee in the L.A. Promise program. The role requires student workers to maintain strong grades, something that also helps him stay eligible to compete on the soccer team. Gonzales says those expectations push him to stay focused and set a positive example for other students.

“When students come in asking for help, you have to be a role model,” he says. “You show them what being a good student looks like and how the program can help them succeed.”

Outside the classroom, Gonzales also draws inspiration from his father. Growing up primarily with his dad, he says that relationship continues to motivate him and he says that the key to success in college is persistence. “I know it gets really hard,” he says. “But you just have to persevere, manage your time, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”
