The Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives at Syracuse University is dedicated to preserving all aspects of the event and aftermath of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. This site is dedicated to the 270 men, women and children whose lives were lost in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. Included in

the collection are newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, information on trials, government documents, books, audio and videotapes, posters, exhibit materials, and items specific to individual victims.

This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Maria Nieves de Larracoechea. An employee of Pan American World Airways for almost 18 years, Nieves was the only Spanish flight attendant employed by the company at that time. She had been based in London since 1978. During her time with Pan Am, Nieves received many awards and commendations and was frequently praised for her performance. Described as “vivacious and utterly charming,” she loved working in economy class so that she could be around many different types of travelers. Nieves’ husband, Frank Rosenkranz, became very involved with the work of victims’ groups in pursuing justice for their loved ones. Frank was instrumental in coordinating with the European families and advocating for more rigorous aviation security measures in his home country, Germany, where several passengers connected to Pan Am Flight 103. Frank has generously donated the Maria Nieves de Larracoechea Family Papers including memorial materials for Nieves and his own autobiography to the Pan Am 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives. We remember Nieves, and all the victims.

This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Ronald Albert Lariviere. A special agent with the Diplomatic Security Service assigned to Beirut, Lebanon, Ron was returning home to spend the holidays with his wife and young daughter in Alexandria, Virginia. In his eulogy, then U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon John T. McCarthy noted “Ron was a very special kind of security office…a very ambitious young officer, a very clever, a very capable young officer, a very intelligent man…(with) an extra dimension that not everybody has – he was a very compassionate young man.” He is also remembered by friends and loved ones as one of the funniest people they knew. This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Mary Browell Lancaster. A resident of Sherwood Crescent in Lockerbie, Mary was in her home when it was destroyed by the wreckage of Pan Am Flight 103. Born at Moresby Hill, Whitehaven, England in 1907, Mary attended boarding school in Carlisle. After finishing school, Mary went on to Newtonrigg Agricultural College to study Poultry Management. She married John Lancaster in 1931 and they took over Jericho Farm near Whitehaven. Unusually for the time, Mary was a full, legal partner in the business. Following John’s passing, Mary moved to Lockerbie to be closer to her daughter Mollie. She is remembered by friends and family as an avid bridge player and a master of crossword puzzles and other games and skills that made use of her extensive vocabulary and love of language. She was also the steward of her family history, including over a century of letters. We remember Mary, and all the victims.

This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Minas Christopher Kulukundis. Head of the ship broking firm founded by his father, Minas was traveling to New York to join his family for the funeral of his uncle. Minas attended Corpus Christi College Oxford where he studied classics, ancient history, and philosophy before completing his Certified Public Accountant exams and specializing in financial management and accounting. He was a respected figure in London, known for his hard work and conscientiousness. Minas is also remembered as a devoted husband and father with a deep love of travel and appreciation for the arts, especially opera. His yearly visits to Greece were the continuation of a family tradition. We remember Minas, and all the victims.

This month’s Pan Am 103 Archives tribute honors Elke Etha Kuehne. A flight attendant on Pan Am 103, Elke had joined the airline in 1970 and been based in Miami, Washington, D.C. and New York before transferring to their London base in 1976. Prior to working for Pan Am, Elke studied languages in London and Paris, took her interpreter exams, and worked as a foreign correspondent in France. She is remembered as someone with a happy and joyful nature who was always willing to help, which earned her both recognition and friendship among her colleagues. We remember Elke, and all the victims.
