A stretch of Route 19 in Le Roy, New York, now bears the name of a Syracuse University-trained officer who never came home.

On Aug. 27, community members, elected officials and family gathered near Batavia, New York, to dedicate the Lt. Gary A. Scott Memorial Highway, honoring a Genesee County native who trained as an Army ROTC cadet through Syracuse University before making the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.

Scott graduated from Le Roy High School in 1963 and enrolled at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. As a "cross town" cadet, he came to campus to complete his Army ROTC training through Syracuse University's Army ROTC program and graduated in 1967 before deploying to Vietnam.

On March 29, 1968, Lt. Scott was killed while shielding a fellow soldier during an ambush near Hue City. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his courage.

Cross-town cadets like Lt. Scott represent a long tradition of Army ROTC partnership between Syracuse University and area colleges. His story is a lasting reminder of the sacrifice woven into that legacy.

Today, we welcomed incoming veteran and military-connected students to Syracuse University during our annual Orientation and Resource Fair at the National Veterans Resource Center.

Students learned more about the resources available across campus and throughout the Syracuse community, met fellow military-connected students and began building connections to support their transition to Syracuse University.

Maria Calabrese Murray ’44 helped chart a new course for women in the U.S. Navy. Now, her legacy has a home at Syracuse University.

During World War II, Murray was one of five Syracuse women selected to attend the U.S. Naval Midshipman School before serving as an officer in the WAVES. Today, her uniform, photographs and other pieces of her remarkable story are on display at the National Veterans Resource Center.

The exhibit also includes a hand-drawn map of Iwo Jima created during her service, which is being carefully prepared for public display.

Thanks to a generous donation from Murray’s daughter, Susan Cooper, visitors can learn more about a Syracuse alum whose life was defined by service, creativity and a willingness to go first.

A new chapter begins for 16 sailors and Marines at Syracuse University.

Ron Novack, Executive Director of the OVMA, recently welcomed the newest Newhouse School at Syracuse University Military Visual Journalism class to the National Veterans Resource Center, giving students a closer look at the spaces, resources and community available to them throughout their time at Syracuse.

As they prepare to sharpen their skills as military storytellers, we’re proud to welcome them into our military-connected Orange community.

From the boxing ring to military service to generations of entrepreneurship, Bill Byrne ’47 and Charles “Vin” Byrne ’49 built a legacy that continues today.

We recently inducted the brothers into the Captain Floyd “Ben” Schwartzwalder Hall of Honor at the National Veterans Resource Center.

In 1943, Bill and Vin became the first brothers to win Eastern Intercollegiate boxing championships in the same year. They later answered the call to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps before returning to Syracuse as part of the University’s historic “G.I. Bulge.” They went on to become the second generation to lead Byrne Dairy, building upon the Syracuse business their father founded in 1933.

Their legacy will also continue through a new endowed scholarship for military-connected students, established by Syracuse University with support from Byrne Dairy. 🍊
