The Syracuse University Humanities Center—housed within the College of Arts and Sciences—cultivates diverse forms of humanities scholarship; sponsors dynamic programming; and highlights the humanities as a public good. Through our faculty and graduate student fellowships, distinguished visiting professorships, and diverse programming, including Syracuse Symposium, a public events series focused around an annual theme, the Center cultivates research, supports interdisciplinary collaboration, and fosters public engagement with the humanities, broadly conceived. Our work highlights how the humanities are indispensable for examining enduring questions, confronting pressing social issues, and addressing ongoing inequities.

Our Syracuse Symposium series on "Dreams" begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24 with readings by author-artist, Kao Kalia Yang, hosted by SUNY Upstate at the Community Folk Art Center. Yang’s writing channels the experiences of her community into collective memoirs, showing how creative, embodied practices remake home and belonging in the wake of war, displacement, and resettlement.

It is time for renewed alliance.

"The idea that a college education is a form of basic workforce preparation, rather than preparation for life as a human being and as a citizen, has taken hold across American society. Knowledge of human behavior, the ability to communicate and to interpret, understanding of cultural difference, appreciation of the creative arts that give life meaning—wide access to all these things are threatened by political and economic forces. (...) Associations and organizations, these human collectives that function through compromise and consensus, will play key roles in the evolution of the system."

Dorri Beam (ENG) and Gail Bulman (LLL) just sent us a lovely digital postcard:

"Greetings from North Carolina! We wanted to share this photo of us standing in front of the National Humanities Center. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to work on our manuscripts and fine tune our projects. It’s refreshing to spend focused time in this lovely and supportive setting."

Both scholars earned coveted spots in the NHC's Summer Writing Institute, with application support from Sarah Workman and Vivian May, through the Humanities Center.
