Innovation Law Center at Syracuse University College of Law

Innovation Law Center at Syracuse University College of Law Our mission is to facilitate New York State’s economic development by leveraging the expertise of law faculty and students to assist NYS businesses.

The NYS Science + Technology Law Center has been a leader in technology commercialization for nearly a decade. Since our inception, we’ve assisted hundreds of companies and institutions in their quest to commercialize emerging technology. At our core is the Syracuse Law’s Technology Commercialization Law Program (TCLP). Established in 1990, the TCLP is an innovative program that was the first of i

ts kind in the country to combine science and technology development with legal analysis and hands-on experience. In August 2004, Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) recognized the unique value and economic contributions of the Technology Commercialization Law Program (TCLP) and established the New York State Science + Technology Law Center at Syracuse University College of Law. The mission of the NYS STLC is to facilitate New York State’s economic development by leveraging the experience and expertise of law faculty and students to assist even more NYS businesses and institutions in delivering new and emerging technology to the marketplace.

What does it look like to graduate law school already credentialed as a patent agent?

For Carl Graziadei L'26 and Madison McCarthy L'26, it means walking into full-time associate positions at Bond, Schoeneck & King before they've even crossed the stage.

Both students passed the USPTO patent bar exam during law school through Syracuse Law's Innovation Law Center (ILC). Thanks to a generous gift from Rodney Ryan L'97, the ILC is formalizing that path into an official patent law program launching summer 2026.

The program will prepare eligible students with STEM backgrounds to sit for the patent bar before graduation, and reimburse them for prep and exam costs.
