Syracuse University Pan Am 103 Remembrance

Syracuse University Pan Am 103 Remembrance In honor of the victims of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103. As an institution of higher education, we examine the causes of terrorism.

When Pan Am 103 exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988, 270 people, including 35 students returning from Syracuse University's study abroad programs, were killed. The campus was devastated and then Chancellor Melvin Eggers declared, "some of our best and brightest" had been lost. In the aftermath of the Pan Am 103 bombing, Syracuse University, as an institution, promised that we wo

uld not forget our students. We vowed to hold their memories in our hearts in the best way we knew how - through learning and teaching so that tragedies like Pan Am 103 would not be repeated. With the knowledge gained by this examination and research, we can work to prevent future terrorist acts. The Remembrance Scholars — 35 senior students who receive $5000 scholarships during their final year at the University, and the Lockerbie Scholars — 2 students from Lockerbie, Scotland who study at Syracuse for one year, are one way that Syracuse University strives to fulfill our promise. Through these scholarships, the University encourages our students to exchange ideas and to educate themselves and the entire campus community about the devastating effects of terrorism. These students are future leaders, and their recognition as Remembrance or Lockerbie Scholars reflect the close bonds that have formed between our two communities, as well as our strong desire to remember and to learn. Remembrance Week takes place at Syracuse University each fall and includes many events, ceremonies and programs to pay tribute to the victims of this tragedy while encouraging strides towards reducing terrorism and its tragic byproducts.
