National Public Health Week - Day 5!

Today's theme is "Rural Health"

Rural communities often face significant health disparities related to poverty, food desserts, environmental hazards, limited resource availability, and limited healthcare access.

Rural living Americans have higher rates of cigarette smoking, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Youth living in rural areas also face higher rates of mental illness and occupational injury from farm work.

Public Health, Healthcare, and other professions must work to build community capacity for our rural living communities in order to best promote and protect the health of all.

National Public Health Week - Day 4!

Today's theme is Mental Health.

Our mental health continually impacts how we feel, think, and act. One in Five US adults are impacted by mental illness, with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorders being the most common.

While there are many biological factors which can lead to mental illness, other factors such as social exclusion, discrimination, resource availability, and additional community factors increase the risk.

Our mental health is so much more than just us as individuals. We must work together to build strong, inclusive communities with positive social support, adequate resources, and social connectedness.

Let's all work together to build our communities up!

Happy National Public Health Week - Day 2!

Today's theme is "Violence Prevention".

Violence comes in many forms and not all communities face the same rates or kinds of violence. Public Health is dedicated to understanding the influences of violence and the best ways we can prevent violence in our communities.

The American Public Health Association recommends the following readings to learn more about the types of violence different communities face.

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Are Prisons Obsolete? by Angela Y. Davis

The Night of the Gun by David Carr
