Theta Chapter of La Unidad Latina Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. The original idea of bringing La Fraternidad to Syracuse University was sparked by Hermano Zhamyr “Sammy” Cuevas in the Fall of 1990. at Syracuse University.

Founding Hermano Frankie Gonzalez was also very instrumental in bringing LUL to Syracuse University after he realized that Latinos had no representation in S.U Greek life. The concept of a Latino fraternity became very intriguing. A fraternity would inspire brotherhood among Latinos and perhaps spark activity, which would foster a positive image. Six men signed their letter of intent. In this lett

er the seeds of Theta Chapter were sewn. Our founders came with the force and determination to make a name for our organization. Not only would the organization promote cultural awareness and pride within the community, but also it would serve as a support network for discontented students. So, at a time when the national organization was still very young, these six men worked diligently to establish the 8th chapter (Theta) of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated. That same year LUL also established chapters at SUNY Albany (Eta) and Rutgers University New Brunswick (Iota). At 2:30 am on Saturday April 27th, 1991 the
Theta Chapter of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity Inc. was born at Syracuse University. On this date six men received the title of Hermano de La Fraternidad. Jose Waldo Escolastico

Since its inception, the Theta Chapter has grown from its initial 6 members and currently boasts a roster of over 60 Hermanos who are professionals in a variety of fields. "We were trying to fill a void, giving Latinos a choice to enter Greek life with an organization they can relate to. At 18, we didn’t know the significant impact that we created until after we established the chapter at Syracuse."

Congratulations to one of our chapter founders, Zhamyr “Sammy” Cueva ’93. Sammy will be awarded a Chancellor’s Citation during the Coming Back Together (CBT) African American and Latino alumni reunion this fall.

“Cueva turned what started as fraternity fundraisers at Syracuse University into a successful business. Today, that business, Sammy Cueva Entertainment Inc., has morphed into one of the most recognized event planning and networking companies in New York City. Having opened several New York City restaurants and related businesses, Cueva has become a leader in the restaurant industry. His Latin Fusion restaurant, Blend on the Water, has received major acknowledgments from People Magazine and Open Table, which listed Blend as one of the top 100 restaurants in the United States. In addition to owning businesses, Cueva continues to succeed in upper management in city government.
Cueva makes it a point to give back to his community by awarding scholarships, donating turkeys during the holidays or speaking to the youth who grew up in underprivileged neighborhoods similar to the one where he was raised. As a student at Syracuse, Cueva participated in SU Abroad and was one of the founding members of Lambda Upsilon Lambda. In his senior year, he was named to Who’s Who among Students. Cueva is a 1993 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, and is the donor of the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations plaques honoring Latino fraternities and sororities in the Orange Grove on campus and also gives to the Latino Alumni Network of Syracuse University fund.”

(CBT) African American and Latino alumni reunion this fall. Organized by the Office of Program Development, CBT will be held Sept. 14-17.
