Last week, three of our M.S. program students, Haley Smith, Maggie Turck and Ellie Ashby, attended the Northeastern Association of Forensic Scientists meeting in Pennsylvania! Haley also presented her research during the Toxicology Scientific Session, "Optimizing Protein Precipitation Based on Extraction for Kratom Alkaloids in Postmortem Toxicology" conducted with the Cuyahoga County MEO and Regional Forensic Science Laboratory in Cleveland.

Our seminar series is back for this Friday, 10/16 with guest speakers Andrew Zeblisky and Emma Thoms! Andrew and Emma are both former students of the Master's Program in Forensic Science-Advanced Laboratory, and are currently employed by the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Center.

They have a great seminar prepared and will discuss their academic journeys, experiences in the job search and hiring process, training requirements for the NYSP, and other useful information future forensic scientists should be on the lookout for when entering the workforce. Two weeks ago, we welcomed Rachel Singer, Executive Assistant DA and Chief of the Forensic Science & Cold Case Unit at Kings County District Attorney's Office for our first seminar of the fall semester! We had a great turnout of both graduate and undergraduate student attendees who loved learning about the intersection of forensic science and the justice system, including recent developments in case law regarding forensic evidence used in criminal cases.

Last week we had the privilege of participating in The Summit: Syracuse University Into the Future, a campus-wide sharing of ideas, innovation and community as part of Chancellor Haynie's inauguration celebration. It was amazing to see so many attendees learn about forensic science through our booth's activities, including bloodstain pattern analysis, presumptive testing with simulated blood, footwear impressions and use of the FARO scanner in crime scene investigation. A special thanks goes to Professor Pettolina and students Jilliyn Lundeen and Kayla Pierce for running the show!

Congratulations to Professor Maria Pettolina on being appointed Chair of the Crime Scene Investigation & Reconstruction Subcommittee, in the Scene Scientific Area Committee within OSAC for Forensic Science! 👏
