The Newhouse School has launched the Newhouse Parents Advisory Council, which brings together parents and guardians of current students to advise school leadership, expand networking opportunities and provide support for learning experiences and academic initiatives.

The council will include leaders and professionals from the communications industry and beyond.

“Staying connected to parents and seeing Newhouse and Syracuse University through their eyes is so important to our core mission of providing the best educational experience possible,” Newhouse Dean Mark J. Lodato said.

Syracuse University's Center for the Creator Economy is hosting its second annual ‘CUSE Creator Con, Oct. 22–23, right on campus.

Students will hear from industry leaders, including a keynote from Ted Murphy, founder and CEO of COEY, and spend two days learning directly from professionals shaping the creator economy, one of the fastest-growing industries today.

It’s the kind of hands-on, real-world learning opportunity Syracuse is known for: connecting students with the people and companies defining where their field is headed. The event is open to all students and free to attend.

With over 35,000 members, the can be found throughout media, communications and entertainment. Many members keep close ties to Newhouse to speak to classes, provide internship or job leads, and engage in other meaningful ways that support students.

Local newsrooms are looking for ways to better serve their communities, and new research from Local NExT Lab at Syracuse University's Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship is helping them find out what works. 📰

The lab's first impact report found that readers were more likely to view an investigative story as relevant, important and accurate when it was surrounded by community-focused reporting. IDJC senior researcher and Newhouse associate professor Joshua Darr led the work. The lab launched in 2025 with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to help newsrooms test strategies for informing and engaging with their readers.

Research from the Local News Experimental Testing Lab (Local NExT Lab) examined how newsrooms can reach audiences and build trust.

Experiential learning is at the heart of a Newhouse education. Visual communications students got the opportunity to do just that, immersing themselves in hands-on, project-based visual storytelling across Scotland in June 2026. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿The trip was led by Michael O. Snyder, an assistant professor of visual communications.

Students spent two weeks in the capital city of Edinburgh partnering directly with a local nonprofit to produce a multimedia project addressing social and environmental issues. The course culminated with a week at Bamff, a centuries-old estate at the forefront of the rewilding efforts in the Highlands.

Challenges face publishers of independent local news outlets. A new survey from Syracuse University's Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship finds that burnout is one of the top issues.

Researchers heard from 112 publishers in 37 states and Washington, D.C. Among those with 100-500 paying subscribers, 77% cited burnout. Merrill Brown, IDJC visiting fellow, and Jacob Spudich G'26, who graduated with a master's in advanced media management from Newhouse, conducted the study.

“More financing, more training and more local support is required if the current independent local news revolution is going to be sustained,” Brown says.

Congratulations to six Newhouse students whose racing-themed idea for Uber has won a national pitch competition! 🏁

The contest, organized through Home From College for an Uber campaign, drew teams from 14 universities. The Newhouse team of Carolyn Ellis, Katie Huang, Rebecca Lipset, Emilie Oestreicher, Sophia Volz and Paige Wyant earned the win with a concept that turned into the "One Crew" on-campus experience that Uber is bringing to Syracuse.

Want to see it in person? Stop by the Quad in front of Sims Hall this Friday, Oct. 2, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event includes a racing simulator, a photo booth, gift bags and merchant rewards, and it's open to all students who sign up for a free year of Uber One.

Jordan Mendal ’88, vice president of specials for WWE, graduated from Syracuse University with a bachelor’s in broadcast journalism at the Newhouse School.

But when he first applied in high school, he didn’t get in. His academics were improving, so his college advisor told him to send his second semester senior year grades to see if he could transfer into Newhouse.

“So, while all of my friends were taking it easy second semester, senior year, it was not a party for me, and I buckled down and really studied hard. I was taking a journalism class at the time and my teacher really, really thought I was doing fantastic.”

About a week before classes started, Mendal got the word: He got into Newhouse.
