Marhaba,
The Arab Student Association condemns the racist incidents targeting the Black, Asian, and Jewish communities that took place on campus in the past week. We are in solidarity with the movement and all students who are impacted by the current, as well as previous racist incidents and attacks that may or may not have been shared with others or widely known. Additionally, we would like to commend the students who have continued to protest the administration since the movement has began. It is critical that the Syracuse community come together as a whole to ensure the safety of all students and communities on campus. We must not tolerate the racist and ignorant actions displayed in recent days.
The Arab Student Association calls on faculty and staff to support all students directly and indirectly impacted by the recent escalation of racist attacks on the campus. We urge the university to respond to these events swiftly and that it suspends business as usual in an environment where students feel threatened, endangered and unsafe.
In light of recent escalation of racism last night, we hope that students who are threatened, targeted and/or feel unsafe will reach out to and communicate with others and utilize sources available on and off campus for your support. If you witness or are the target of a racist incident on campus, please communicate with others and reach out to DPS as soon as possible or the Syracuse police in the case of an emergency. You can reach the DPS at 315-443-2224 and here is the link to their page with all of their contact information: https://dps.syr.edu/about/contact-us/ .We also encourage you to email your professors to discuss the recent events taking place on campus and if you feel that you would be placed in danger by attending classes and choose to remain at home. Please do not travel anywhere alone for the time being and stay in contact with a friend or family.
Moving forward, we would like for you all to please keep in mind that we are a resource for you and here to support you during these difficult times.
If you want to have your voice heard, I would encourage you to share any of your experiences as a person of color and student or staff of SU. You are not required to participate in this sharing of information, but if you feel comfortable doing so, please feel free to contact us! Keep in mind that these will be shown as anonymous, of course, as we value both the physical and mental safety, security, and stability of any person more than anything.
Please stay safe!
