The official page for Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Origins of the college date to 1873, when the College of Fine Arts opened at SU. The college was the first degree-conferring institution of its kind in the United States. Its first alumnus graduated in 1875 with a bachelor of painting degree.

From classroom concept to hands-on learning 🎵🎛️

Students in Live Sound and Concert Recording (MUI 308) take what they learn in the classroom and put it into practice through hands-on exercises in Setnor Auditorium.

By the end of the semester, they have a strong understanding of the fundamentals and techniques of live sound recording. 🎚️

The Department of Drama has announced the 2026-27 season, consisting of six productions:

🎭 “Rent” (Oct. 16 – 25)
🎭 “Henry V” (Nov. 13 – 21)
🎭 “Les Misérables” (Nov. 27 – Jan. 3), co-produced with Syracuse Stage
🎭 “Private Eyes” (Feb. 19 – 28)
🎭 “An American in Paris” (March 26 – April 4)
🎭 “Before the Bone Breaks” (April 23 – May 2)

“As educators, we believe that a great theater education demands a diversity of content, styles, voices and theatrical experiences,” says Department of Drama Chair Eleanor Holdridge. “I believe that this season does exactly that: gives students a rich artistic landscape in which to learn, create, take risks and discover their own voices.”

From the classroom to the 69th Annual New York Emmy Awards! 🎥🎊

A film developed in a cross-disciplinary class, Acting and Filmmaking for Social Change (FIL 500), has received two New York Emmy Award nominations.

Students served as the primary cast and crew of “Spiral,” a short film exploring the mental health of college students. The film was nominated for Best Director and Societal Concerns.

Co-teachers and the film’s directors, Adria Dawn and David Tarleton, brought students into the filmmaking process. They’ll travel this week to the ceremony and gala, along with at least two students, now alumni.

“We want everyone to know that when we are there, win or not, we are proud of the work that each and every person did for this film,” Dawn and Tarleton say. “We’re grateful, and we’ll take each of them with us in spirit.”
