: Art in the courtroom ✍️

Students filled the jury box inside the Melanie Gray Ceremonial Courtroom in the Syracuse University College of Law’s Dineen Hall earlier this semester, sketchbooks out, to capture live arguments during a session of the U.S. Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals. 🧑‍⚖️

The collaboration with the College of Law introduced illustration students to different types of live drawing activities and served as a networking opportunity, says London Ladd, assistant teaching professor of illustration.

“When you’re an illustration major, there’s a lot of fields that you can enter into,” says Ladd. “So, for me, courtroom sketching is something they can do if they want to or just live sketching. But I think for them, it gets them practicing their craft.”

What if the right shoe could change a young player’s game? ⚽

Abdulai Jibril Barrie ’26, an industrial and interaction design major, traveled to Guinea to research soccer players who often compete on compacted sand, gravel lots and worn urban grounds. Most commercial cleats simply aren’t built for these surfaces.

His project, “Boot of Dreams,” is about creating footwear specifically for informal play in West Africa, prioritizing durability, comfort and longer wear for the surfaces these players use.

“The right footwear can help young players stay on the pitch longer, practice more consistently and keep pursuing what they love,” says Barrie.

After graduation, Barrie is taking his passion for purposeful design to Nike as a designer II for the Jordan brand. 🎓
