Wampum belts and malacology are more related that you may realize!

Malacology is the study of mollusks, and the beads that are used to craft a belt such as this are made from mollusks like the quahog clam and whelk. Wampum is a significant part of Haudenosaunee culture and has multiple uses.

During the American Malacological Society's conference, the group, represented by Professor Rebecca Rundell, presented this belt to Neil Patterson, the executive director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment. The artist of the belt is Richard Hamell.

SUNY ESF Athletics takes 2nd place in the USCAA Director’s Cup for the 2025–26 season 🥈

The Cup honors USCAA member institutions that excel in a wide range of men's and women's sports and compete in championships on a consistent basis.

Standout performances across our teams, including the cross country and golf teams's impressive post-seasons, helped earn ESF the necessary points for our placement. Way to go, Mighty Oaks!

ESF is out and about 🌎

Oakie made a special visit to celebrate and promote children’s literacy while other Mighty Oaks attended the CNY Pride Parade and talked about ecological science at the NYS DEC’s Get Outdoors event. It’s a beautiful day to and love our community 🌱

This camera trap photo features a wolf doing something quite rare - exploring Nevada for the first time in modernity.

Sean Sultaire, a postdoctoral associate here at ESF, spoke recently with The Nevada Independent about a potential start to a wolf recovery story in that section of the U.S. In 2025, he published a study about the sighting in Ecology and Evolution, which included among the co-authors ESF's Joshua Millspaugh. According to the study, wolves were extirpated from the west in the 1920s.
