You may have seen the taxidermy lining our main floor of Gateway (including the beloved musk ox), but did you know that only makes up a fraction of our specimens? It's all a part of the Roosevelt Wildlife Collection!

Named after famed U.S. President and conservationist Theodore Roosevelt, the collection serves as a fantastic learning tool for our students and is carefully maintained. We are currently digitizing information related to the collection, and it has around 10,000 specimens 🤯

Did you know that wetlands are a powerful protector of our environment and the living things in it?

Wetlands are often the first line of defense for communities facing severe weather, particularly due to climate change, and help cycle nutrients. They also house some of our favorite critters such as salamanders and frogs and can also serve as spawning sites.

Central New York has significant freshwater wetlands, including popular site Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, which is 10,004 acres large!

Today, the SUNY ESF community joins in the acknowledgement of Memorial Day.

As we spend time outdoors and with loved ones, let us pause to honor the sacrifice of our service members and reflect on what it means to serve and protect—both our nation and the environment we all share.

The season of picnics and get-togethers is here ☀️ We've got some sustainable tips for whatever and whenever you're celebrating:

🌭 Try RSVPs! By knowing the amount of people ahead of time, you'll be able to reduce the amount of food waste.

🎉 Reuse decor - it's just as festive this year as it was last year! You can also frequently find holiday items in thrift stores.

🍽️ Got leftovers? Wrap them up and send them with guests, or you can have some for lunch the next day. Picnic favorites like mac salad keep well.

SUNY ESF has earned the STARS Platinum rating, the highest distinction in higher education sustainability, from AASHE 🌿

We are one of only four institutions worldwide to earn top ranking under the updated framework. With more than 1,200 participants in 52 countries, AASHE’s STARS program enables meaningful comparisons over time and across institutions using a common set of measurements, and it facilitates information sharing about higher education sustainability practices and performance.

Many things contributed to this ranking, including student engagement with volunteer and civic opportunities, incorporation of sustainability into curriculum, campus initiatives, and more. You can read about the designation: https://bit.ly/491KtZU
