Digging around in our trash, recycling, and compost is fun, but it also serves an important purpose!

Waste audits are key for helping to inform our sustainability goals. It helps let us know if we need additional programming, signage, or outreach to help our community learn and grow.

Did you know that Starbucks cups aren't recyclable? Through a waste audit, we noticed these popping up in recycling bins, so we increased our outreach and have now seen a significant decrease in incorrect cup discard 🚮

Chemistry goes beyond lecture concepts - how do we apply it to what's happening around us and where we want to go?

That's a question that Professor Neal Abrams likes to consider when it comes to teaching and research. You can get to know him and other faculty here at ESF through our "Meet the Faculty" series available on YouTube 📺

Sustainability at ESF is a pretty big deal to us. Paula took us to some spots on campus to show off a few everyday sustainability efforts that our campus engages in ♻️

Being green runs deep for us Mighty Oaks, including creating a comprehensive Sustainability Action Plan, exploring ways we can incorporate reuse materials and make our buildings more eco-friendly, performing waste audits and data collection, and so much more. Oh, and did we mention we're a Platinum-certified AASHE institution (one of 20 in the whole world)? We're ranked #1 in the categories of curriculum AND investment.

Curious to see these efforts in person? Make sure to schedule a visit with us: www.esf.edu/admissions/visit

SUNY ESF and the NYS DEC just signed a new five-year agreement to continue the Lands and Forests Internship Program through 2030.

Now in its 18th year, the program has grown from a small pilot into a statewide initiative. In 2026, 53 SUNY - The State University of New York students from 10 campuses worked hands-on with DEC on invasive species research, forest health, land management, and surveying, from Long Island to the Adirondacks.

Dr. Robert Malmsheimer, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor here at ESF, is also the program administrator.
