🍂 ICYMI: Under crisp autumn skies, with sunshine filtering through the trees and purple and gold on full display, Convocation — UW Tacoma's annual back-to-school celebration — part block party, part resource fair, opened the 2026–2027 academic year on campus.

After a performance by the Lincoln High School drumline, the speaking program included welcoming messages of support from Chancellor Sheila Edwards Lange, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Mentha Hynes-Wilson, Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Andy Harris, and Associated Students of UW Tacoma (ASUWT) President Terrell Stalworth.

David Sway-La Cougar Duenas, a UW Tacoma alumnus and member of the Puyallup Nation, offered a traditional song of strength.

Tables hosted by departments across campus connected students to academic programs, food resources, affinity centers and more.

From the Center for Student Involvement to the Office of Indigenous Engagement and from the University YMCA Student Center to the Office of Global Affairs, students were introduced to many opportunities to get involved and make connections.

From Tacoma Husky to Survivor second runner-up, Sage Ahrens-Nichols (MSW ‘24) has never followed a conventional path. 🔥 💜

Like tallying the votes without torchlight, no season of Survivor is complete without an oddball on the beach: the eccentric personality who can play to a quirky soundtrack as easily as they can drop an epic one-liner mid-blindside.

Within this varied subcategory of TV trope, Ahrens-Nichols sits firmly in the “goofy” camp — right where she wants to be.

It was a year ago that season 49 of Survivor made its debut, and the world was introduced to Sage: a Master of Social Work graduate who honed her social game strategy at UW Tacoma long before she landed in Fiji.

Between an unfiltered approach to relationship-building and her affinity for bodily functions, Ahrens-Nichols won over the world and honored her personal journey with every on-camera confessional.

“This story is one of finding my way back to that weird little kid who didn’t fit in anywhere,” Ahrens-Nichols explained. “But finding my way back to her and loving her this time.”

It’s the sound of summer sliding into fall, Tacoma Huskies, and a new academic year with it.

This week, we filled the Prairie Line Trail with music, food, friends and plenty of Husky spirit for Convocation — our annual kickoff to celebrate the new school year in the heart of Grit City. 🎉🚂

Between Dubs (our special guest from Seattle), the drum line, food trucks and fall leaves starting to turn, it was an afternoon to remember on campus.

Here's to another year of big ideas, new connections and a whole lot of T-Town pride.
