80-degree take: PNW summers don't need optimizing. β˜€

And besides β€” there's 5,059 ways to summer (one for every Tacoma Husky). πŸ’œπŸΎ

With senior year in her sights, there was a moment when Natalie Stacy, a fourth-year Tacoma Husky majoring in business administration, wondered whether she was squandering her summer by not tacking on 12 credits on top of her retail job and internship. πŸ“šπŸ‘€

Turns out, she had a lot to learn from stepping back to catch her breath.

Between cannonballs, pickleball and chasing waterfalls, Natalie prioritized filling her cup this summer, literally and metaphorically. 🍹

Not that she was ever standing still; her summer break balanced lake hangs with healthy habits, clocking in and creating content during her internship with the marketing team at UW Tacoma.

Diana Algomeda (BA β€˜19, M.Ed. β€˜22) is ready to give the next generation a leg up.

As director of enrollment management at Seattle Girls' School, Algomeda champions equitable access to education, just as she did during her studies at UW Tacoma. πŸΎπŸ’œ

Born in Mexico and the oldest of four siblings, she came to the United States with her family at just 10 years old.

As a high school senior, Algomeda was just beginning to explore college options when she needed to find work instead; An on-the-job accident wiped out half her family’s income when Algomeda’s mother was unable to return to either of her previous positions.

Now tasked with contributing to the household, Algomeda pursued her studies anyway, choosing UW Tacoma for the welcoming vibe on campus.

Finding the balance between hosting tables, tutoring, working the front desk at a car dealership and taking public transit to reach them all, Algomeda managed to squeeze in study time, filling the gaps in her schedule with hitting the books. πŸ“š

During her time at UW Tacoma, Algomeda was a Pack Advisor, Dressel Scholar, Director of Internal Communications for ASUWT and a recipient of a Rod Hagenbuch Gift of Service Award.

She also co-created the First-Gen Fellows program, advocating for expanded institutional support for students who are the first in their families to attend college (like her). πŸ’›

Cut to today, and Algomeda continues to bring opportunity and investment to eager minds, just as she did at UW Tacoma β€” now from Seattle Girls' School.

Intimately familiar with the transformative impact of education, Algomeda couldn't be happier to help her students thrive: "It's a full circle moment."

The mascot must be ready for anything:

A triple play.
A t-shirt cannon.
A decade-old dance on the dugout. ⚾️

You call it tomfoolery.
We call it an elite game-day performance. πŸ€™πŸͺ©πŸ•ΊπŸ»

University of Washington experts in fire science, forestry and health sciences have shared practical guidance for navigating wildfire season, including trusted resources for tracking wildfire activity and air quality, tips for reducing smoke exposure, preparing your home and evacuation plans, and managing the stress and anxiety that can accompany these events.

Before heading outdoors, check trusted sources like AirNow.gov to monitor air quality and wildfire smoke in your area. If smoke is affecting your community, keep windows and doors closed, set your ventilation system to recirculate indoor air when possible, and use a HEPA air filter to help reduce smoke indoors. If an evacuation order is issued, leave immediately, as fire conditions can change rapidly.

Our thoughts remain with the individuals, families and communities across Washington who continue to be affected by this year's wildfires. As many navigate evacuations, poor air quality and ongoing uncertainty, we encourage everyone to stay informed and take steps to protect themselves and those around them.

There are a number of programs and services available to students who may need assistance during this time. We encourage you to reach out if you need support.

We grew this campus building by building, one Gilded Age warehouse at a time. πŸš‚βœ¨

And that's exactly how we'll continue.

Our next residence hall is officially on the way, along with UW Tacoma's first-ever dining hall as we shift gears from commuter campus to college town. πŸŽπŸπŸ•πŸ₯—

Construction is expected to begin in 2027 with the project opening in late 2029.
