Volunteer Services offers three types of events, One Time Events, Volunteer Off-Campus Events, and Spring Breakaway Trips. One Time Events: Where volunteer opportunities are brought to students on-campus! Up next, check out Gracen’s story! The president and co-founder of Huskies for GRIT, one of our biggest volunteer groups on campus!

“My name is Gracen. I am a senior majoring in Biomedical Sciences, graduating at the end of summer 2026. Something interesting about me is that I co-founded an environmental trash cleanup club called Huskies for G.R.I.T. at the beginning of this year. I did it with the help of some very special people who are in the photo with me above. From left to right are Tae Kim, Crystal Le, My Le, me, Sushma Chaudhary, and Dillon Siebrecht. Their tenacity, creativity, and strength are the pillars in the club’s success as well as aided in my ability to volunteer as often as I did.

Volunteering means spending my limited free time wisely and meaningfully. It allows me to give back to the community by making small but measurable differences. Ultimately, our club was able to pick up more than 500 lbs of trash over the course of 10 cleanups.

My volunteer time was split mostly between Huskies for G.R.I.T. and Allenmore Hospital. I decided to spend my time picking up trash because I felt as though Tacoma could use a little love. Having less litter means the flora and fauna are healthier and happier; this includes the humans too! As for my hospital role, getting exposure to a clinical setting was vital in my decision towards beginning a career in healthcare. I’m also glad to help out the nurses and to provide comfort for patients.”

Congratulations and stay in the community, Gracen!

Hey hey, Huskies! It’s student spotlight time! We have 2 spotlights from June, first we have Dillon:

“I’m Dillon Siebrecht, and I’m a class of 2026 grad with a BA in Psychology! A fun fact about me is I’m also a songwriter and guitarist, and occasionally I like to perform live for house parties, cafes, or talent shows. My latest show was at my own grad party I hosted at my house with my girlfriend Gracen (also a frequent volunteer with Huskies for GRIT!) and a couple other local bands from here in Tacoma.

To me volunteering means both creating community, and helping nurture it. Through my volunteering, I’ve gotten to see the work I do lead to the happiness of others around me, both in direct and indirect ways. I find that while this kind of work doesn’t have any kind of monetary gain, you win in other ways like making friends, helping people get connected with one another, and making the community around us a better place to be.

I mostly volunteer on campus as an officer with the RSOs Huskies for GRIT (as Presidential Assistant/First Lady, whichever you like better) and FASA sa UWT (as Event Coordinator). With Huskies for GRIT I get to nurture my local community here in Tacoma by helping keep our city clean of trash, and with FASA sa UWT I get to put on events that bring people on campus together and celebrate my Filipino identity.”

Congratulations and keep up the hard work, Dillon!

Better late than never! We are sorry, Huskies, for forgetting about our May spotlight. Here she is now! Check out her story! 👇

“My name is Aleah Curtis, 2026 Masters of Social Work Graduate! I’ve been making a family cookbook for the past 4 Ish years. Volunteering for me just mean that I can give back to those in difficult situations, and even just listening to people and having a normal conversation makes the world of a difference. I Volunteer on my own, I go out to Puyallup area and feed the homeless veteran community, I do it because the veteran community deserves more than what they have, since most of them have been through a lot. I think giving a helping hand is just a way to say thank you for what you have done.”

Stay tuned for our June spotlight coming soon! Remember to log your hours over the summer!
