Hey, Titans! We're busy getting ready for the first day of class (Sept. 21!) and the Financial Aid office is especially busy. They're going to be closed here and there so that they can get all of the applications processed.

Tuesday, Sept. 1 & Wednesday, Sept. 2, are days the office is closed for application processing. If you have a question that won't wait, email them at [email protected].

Friday, Aug: 28: TCC campuses closed. Last day of 4-day summer schedule.
Monday, Aug. 31: TCC returns to its normal 5-day schedule.
Friday, Sept. 4: TCC open.
Monday, Sept. 7: TCC campuses closed for Labor Day.

The South Korea trip wrapped up Friday with a visit to the Mayor of Daegu's office. Thanks to VP of College Relations Tamyra Howser for the story & photos!

Toward the end of the visit with the City of Daegu and Suseong University, TCC President Ivan L. Harrell, II, Ph.D. and Jun Yi of the Washington-Tacoma Korean American Association met with Mayor Choo Kyong-Ho. Although Daegu is a city of 2 million, Mayor Choo acknowledged it wasn’t the size of our cities, but the people-to-people connections and its common industries that both Tacoma and Daegu share. Mayor Choo, who attended University of Oregon, also had fond memories of the Pacific Northwest, and shared his ongoing respect for the U.S. as a key ally.

Dr. Harrell talked about the beauty and vibrancy of Daegu, Korea’s fourth largest city, and of our excitement about our agreement with Suseong University. Jun, representing the City of Tacoma as the vice chair of the Sister City Committee (Gunsan), spoke of his personal connection with Daegu, and how Tacoma and Daegu would be excellent Friendship Cities. Mayor Choo expressed his enthusiasm as well. Upon receiving a letter from Tacoma Mayor Anders Ibsen, Mayor Choo agreed to move forward with drafting an official MOU proposal between both Cities.

The city and TCC leaders exchanged gifts as an important way to express respect and establish relations. Dr. Harrell gifted Mayor Choo with a handblown glass bowl, crafted by the Hilltop Artists, along with a few Washington-based gifts. Jun gave Mayor Choo a book written by the Washington-Tacoma Korean American Association and glass art from the Museum of Glass. Mayor Choo gave hand-crafted sunglasses; optometry is one of the industries in Daegu.

The gifts and visit in Daegu, for which no state dollars were used, concluded with successful meetings with Daegu leaders and dignitaries. TCC and the City are excited about the opportunities ahead with Suseong University and the City of Daegu.

The South Korea trip continues! On Thursday, the TCC delegation, led by President Ivan L. Harrell, II, Ph.D. and Jun Yi of the Washington-Tacoma Korean American Association, met with members of the Daegu Veterans Association of Korea. The city of Daegu serves as a key strategic military hub in South Korea. Nearly half a million members belong to the Daegu association; 11 million veterans belong to the Korea Veterans Association.

The delegation met with retired colonels and senior officials of the Republic of Korea. The meeting was coordinated by its chairman, Mr. Kim-In Nam, a strong supporter of the TCC partnership with Suseong University and the development of a Friendship City between Daegu and City of Tacoma. On Tuesday, TCC formally established its partnership with Suseong University. This visit, on which no state funds are being used, has served as a way to build relations with a new partner.

Dr. Harrell spoke of the history shared by the United States and the Republic of Korea, and how veterans continue to play an important role in shaping past, current and future friendships and partnerships. Both Tacoma and Daegu are communities that hold significant military presence, and understand the importance of supporting veterans, honoring their service and ensuring the next generation understands the history behind the relationship between both countries. The delegation also shared personal connections with Daegu – Jun Yi was born and raised in Daegu and was stationed in Daegu, twice in his military career; James Newman, TCC Executive Director of International Programs, also served in Daegu.

Later that day, the group traveled to the Korean and American Hill 303 Memorial Park, a site that commemorates a major battle between North Korea and UN Forces. Forty-five U.S. soldiers were taken as Prisoners of War; 41 of them were massacred at this site on Aug. 17, 1950. At the memorial, the names of the lost were imprinted in stone, with the statement “Always remember: People who forget war will invite danger to themselves.”
