Stick around after the film & join Dr. Brackett in a discussion around the history and connection of racism & CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) in the NFL, centering the Black American relationship with the NFL & the lawsuit about "race-norming" in CTE compensation from 2021. Finally, we'll tie it all into this most recent Super Bowl, with its major Black presence & message.

African American Studies, the School of Education, and the Race & Pedagogy Institute are co-sponsoring "An Evening with Education Journalist Benjamin Herold" on Wed. March 27, 6:00 - 7:30pm in the Wheelock Rotunda.

This presentation centers on Herold's book, Disillusioned: Five Families and the Unraveling of American's Suburbs. Disillusioned tells the story of five families living in suburbs outside of Chicago, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Dallas. Through examination of our history of racial segregation, white flight, and capital disinvestment, and through interviews with these families, Herold documents our current suburban decline and the way suburban schools are failing students.

This event is free and open to the public.

It's that time of the year when students are signing up for classes. Well we got some good ones. The one we are most excited about is the one being taught by our visiting assistant professor, Dr. Hyunjoo Yu, "The 1619 Project". It's also a block class meeting only once a week on Tuesdays at 3:30pm.

On Monday, October 9, renowned poet and essayist Ross Gay will deliver the Fall 2023 Susan Resneck Pierce Lecture in Public Affairs and Arts and in partnership with the Race & Pedagogy Institute. Prof. Gay’s collections of poetry have garnered the PEN American Literary Jean Stein Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and his collected essays The Book of Delights was a New York Times bestseller. His newest collection, The Book of (More) Delights was released in September of 2023.

Following Prof. Gay’s reading will be a book signing in the Pierce Atrium, Wyatt Hall from 8:30-9 p.m.

Tickets: At the artist’s request, this reading is free of charge for all. No-cost tickets are available online and at the Logger Store in Wheelock Student Center.
