On August 28, 2021, at approximately 12:49 a.m., Abram Pantoja (27) was involved in a hit and run collision with injuries at the intersection of Virginia Street at Niles Street. Pantoja failed to stop for a red traffic signal and drove into the intersection directly into the path of a marked Kern County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) patrol vehicle. Pantoja's vehicle struck the patrol vehicle, then struck a traffic signal pole and overturned. Both vehicles received major damage. Pantoja fled the scene on foot leaving behind his injured passengers and the solo Sheriff's Deputy. Two of Pantoja's three passengers suffered major injuries, and were transported to Kern Medical Hospital. The third had minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The KCSO Deputy suffered moderate injuries and was also transported to a local hospital.

CHP identified Pantoja as the driver and obtained a warrant for his arrest. On August 30, 2021, through the course of an investigation, CHP investigators located and arrested Pantoja at his residence. He was placed under arrest and booked for felony DUI, felony hit and run, and driving with a suspended license.
