If you are a sophomore or higher and have not yet taken Historiography & Historical Research with Dr. Farmer, sign up for Spring 2027. Required for all history majors, the course introduces students to the fundamentals of historical practice, preparing them for upper-level courses in the major and careers in the historical profession; it emphasizes the methods and tools historians use. Guided by professional practice standards, the course emphasizes locating, interpreting, and critiquing sources; forming historical questions; writing and presenting research; and recognizing how historiographical trends have shaped historical narratives.

Dr. V's Europe, 1815-1914 provides a comprehensive overview of European history from the end of the Napoleonic Empire to World War I. Special attention will be given to the effects of the Industrial Revolution, conservative Restoration, Romanticism in politics and culture, varieties of nationalism and socialism, the 1848 revolutions, the Crimean War, the last wave of European imperialism, fin-de-siècle trends, and the unification of Italy and Germany. The course will focus on the cultural, economic, and political changes that led to World War I. Through engagement with primary and secondary scholarly sources, students will examine how religion, empire, class, race, and gender shaped social and political development.

Dr. Farmer's The New Imperialism course for Spring 2027 will explore the history of “new imperialism” through political, economic, social, and cultural lenses from the nineteenth century through decolonization. Students will analyze theoretical and historiographical approaches to the study of colonialism and new imperialism, the motives and justifications of imperial powers, the effects of imperialism on colonized peoples, and the rise of independence movements through case studies from Africa, India, Asia, and Latin America.

Join Dr. Silver in Spring 2027 for HIST 4123: 19th Century American Women. This course will take an in-depth look at women in America from the Early Republic to the Modern era. While emphasizing variations due to race, class, region, and societal expectations, we will explore topics and themes such as motherhood, marriage and divorce, reform movements including women's suffrage, abolition, anti-prostitution, and temperance, slavery and freedom, women and the Civil War, and women's paid and unpaid labor. This class meets T and TH from 12:30-1:45 pm in Tahlequah. It counts for the upper-level American History elective for History & Social Studies Ed majors.

History classes teach the exact skills all employers say they want. We are so excited to see you this fall!

If you studied history, you've heard the question at least a hundred times: "so what are you going to do with that?"

Here's the answer we wish more people led with. You learn to read critically when the clock's running. To build a case from evidence and defend it to people who disagree. To find the one thread that matters in a pile of conflicting sources. To write clearly enough to change someone's mind. To tell a claim from a fact.

Every employer we know says they're desperate for exactly those skills. Historians spend years building them. With a new school year almost here, that's worth saying out loud, especially to the students in your life who are still deciding.

Alexa Haley and Micheal Callaway were inducted into the History honors society, Phi Alpha Theta, during the NSU Dept of Social Sciences Honor Society induction ceremony on April 28.

Please join me in congratulating Grant Edwards, a Senior Social Studies Education Major, and Alexa Haley, a Senior History major, on being named History Students of the Month for April 2026.

According to the History faculty, Grant is a hardworking student who excels in class discussions. He also goes above and beyond to be kind and considerate to everyone he encounters. Grant is a thoughtful student who was recognized with an Honor Society award and served as a volunteer History Day judge.

The History faculty also notes that Alexa is a thoughtful student who consistently demonstrates strong analytical skills in class and produces insightful writing. She received an Honor Society award, served as a judge for History Day, and recently presented her research at the Social Science Research Symposium.

Congratulations, Grant and Alexa! We are proud of y’all’s outstanding contributions, dedication, and hard work!

We need historians because they turn information into insight.

From classrooms and boardrooms to museums and public policy settings, historians bring critical thinking, research skills, and the ability to make sense of complex information.

Those skills do not stay in one field. They travel, and they matter everywhere.
