New Florida State University research published today in Science Advances demonstrates a new framework for predicting the motion of kilometer-scale underwater waves that complicate satellite readings of the ocean. 🌊

Led by Yadidya Badarvada — a researcher in the FSU Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) — this work allows for observations of the Earth’s ocean circulation that are about 60 percent more accurate.

New research by a team of Florida State University scientists — including lead author and recent FSU Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science alumnus Michael Secor (left) and his doctoral mentor and Professor of Meteorology Ming Cai (right) — was recently featured by The Cool Down.

The team developed a method to more accurately predict winter weather forecasts months in advance, affording sectors such as agriculture, water management, energy use and public health a longer lead time to prepare for inclement conditions.

"It's the landfalling hurricanes that matter, not the number of hurricanes per season, in terms of human impacts."

A recent Washington Post article quotes Mark Bourassa (FSU Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science and FSU Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS)), who discusses hurricane-related risks amid federal weather forecasters predicting a slower season.

Research by the FSU Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science's Mariana Fuentes has informed a new educational campaign called Boaters for Turtles, designed to reduce the number of sea turtles injured by boats.

Fuentes, who is a professor of oceanography and environmental science at Florida State University, discovered that one in four sea turtles found dead or injured in Florida were hit by a boat, and 98% of those that were hit do not survive.

Florida State University in WTXL Tallahassee ▶️ A new research project by Ming Ye (FSU Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science / FSU - Department of Scientific Computing) will employ a robot called Sunfish and human divers to create 3D maps of a cave system spanning nearly 45 miles beneath Leon and Wakulla counties.

This work aims to find the water sources feeding into the Wakulla Springs basin, which provides drinking water to nearly 10 million people.
