The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest and most academically comprehensive at Florida State, encompassing 200-plus major programs of study and approximately 11,000 students. The oldest college at Florida State University, the College of Arts and Sciences has provided generations of undergraduate students instruction in the liberal arts disciplines that are essential for intellectual devel

opment and personal growth: English and mathematics, history, the humanities, and the physical, biological, and behavioral sciences. The College of Arts and Sciences awarded its first recorded master's degree in 1908, the year before the Florida Female College was renamed the Florida State College for Women. It also awarded the first Florida State College for Women's master's degree in 1909. The first doctorate at Florida State University was awarded in chemistry in 1952. In addition to awarding bachelor of science (BS), bachelor of arts (BA), master of science (MS), master of arts (MA), and doctor of philosophy (PhD) degrees, and heavily supporting the Liberal Studies Program, the College of Arts and Sciences offers an extensive array of foundation courses for preprofessional and professional programs. College of Arts and Sciences faculty members have earned national and international recognition for research, teaching, and distinguished service to the profession. The faculty of the college has included seven members of the National Academy of Sciences, three Nobel laureates, a Pulitzer Prize winner, directors of national commissions, university presidents, and numerous winners of other national or international honors. Locally, university committees have named several arts and sciences faculty Eppes Professors, and more than two dozen of the college's faculty have been selected University Distinguished Professors. More than 125 arts and sciences faculty members have won University Teaching and Advising awards, Developing Scholar awards, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Students in the College of Arts and Sciences have been recipients of a variety of honors, including Rhodes, Truman, and Goldwater scholarships; Rotary awards; Fulbright, McKnight, and Patricia Roberts Harris fellowships; professional society scholarships; and other nationally recognized awards. Among the graduates of the college are scientists; writers; doctors; chief executive officers of major corporations; lawyers; school and college teachers; and university administrators.

It's official! 🎉 Florida State University has launched the FSU Humanities Center within the FSU College of Arts & Sciences, establishing an interdisciplinary hub to advance humanities research and expand the field’s visibility across the university and beyond.

“The Humanities Center reflects the legacy of FSU’s commitment to the advancement of the humanities,” said FSU President Richard McCullough. “We are creating new opportunities for faculty, students, staff and the community to collaborate, pursue important research and further strengthen the humanities at FSU.”

Congratulations to Florida State University's 2026 National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award winners, all six of whom are from the FSU College of Arts & Sciences!

The award is one of the most prestigious honors available to early career faculty and supports those who serve as academic role models in research and education, leading advances in the mission of their department or organization.

▶️ Amy Webster (top left) is an assistant professor in the FSU Department of Biological Science, who studies how genetically identical individuals raised in the same environment, like twins, can still be different, informing our understanding of disease risk.

▶️ Douglas Storace (top right) is an assistant professor in the FSU Department of Biological Science and FSU Program in Neuroscience, who researches how the olfactory system, or sense of smell, influences decision making and our perception of the world around us.

▶️ Kai Zhao (middle right) is an assistant professor in the FSU Department of Computer Science, who designs high-performance computing systems that help researchers manage large amounts of data in experiments and theoretical predictions.

▶️ Michael Gubanov (bottom right) is an assistant professor in the FSU Department of Computer Science and FSU Data Science Program, who is developing a new type of AI to more accurately calculate and interpret numeric data, with applications in healthcare and cancer treatment.

In two weeks, David Kirby (FSU English Department) will deliver "The Music of America, Then and Now" as part of the LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library System's “Library Lunch Break” lecture series! 🎶

Kirby will take attendees on a fast-paced journey through 200 years of American music, from folk and field chants to R&B, the blues, rock 'n' roll and rap.

Marine scientists like Neda Mobasher, a doctoral student in the FSU Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science, examine the growth bands within coral skeletons to reconstruct thousands of years of climate history.
