The Disaster Intelligence Analysis Laboratory (DIAL) at Florida State University is now accepting applications for its Fall 2026 internship cohort. Operated through the Emergency Management and Homeland Security (EMHS) program, DIAL provides students with hands-on experience using Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques to conduct intelligence analysis and create reports for stakeholders.
The lab operates as a fusion center within FSU’s Bellamy Building, offering students practical experience in intelligence operations, live monitoring, and analytical reporting.
This is an unpaid internship requiring 15–20 volunteer hours per week, in person, for a minimum of two semesters beginning Fall 2026. Applicants must be current students with availability in both the fall and spring terms.
Applications are due September 2, 2026, at noon. Interviews will be conducted in person on the week of September 7th.
Applicants must submit a resume and cover letter in PDF format. Incomplete applications or failure to follow instructions on the application will result in disqualification.

Welcome to Fall 2026, the inaugural semester of the Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management and Intelligence Studies (EM/IS).

Fall 2026 marks the start of a new, exciting era, and not just for EMHS-FSU. We know our EM/IS students will go on to do incredible things in their communities, in Florida and beyond. And that's what this is all about: making the world a better, safer place for all. We can't wait to see where it leads us.

As always, we are so thankful to everyone who played a role in helping us get here. To the many students we've had over the years, every professional partnership, and the variety of FSU offices that have supported us during this process: thank you. Now let's get to work 😅

The EMHS Program is the proud winner of the Florida Division of Emergency Management’s Campus Impact Award, which was presented at the Second Annual Florida Training for Emergency Management Awards Gala.

This award recognizes educators and university programs in the field of emergency management or homeland security whose accomplishments have benefitted their community while helping students find meaningful career paths.

It is a true honor to receive this award. We are incredibly proud, and so thankful for all the students, faculty, staff, and other partners who have contributed to our success. All of this is to build a safer, stronger community in Florida and beyond. We know our students will go on to do just that. Go Noles! ❤️

CURSE26 is in the books! Catastrophic Unmanned Remote Sensing Exercise 2026 was a success. Last week, twenty UAS teams from around the state (and beyond) spent a day collecting imagery and delivering geospatial products in response to a simulated disaster. Local and state agencies, backed up by NGOs and community partners, flew mapping, reconnaissance, and damage assessment missions and pushed imagery back to Tallahassee in near real time. This was the largest CURSE exercise to date (we started the series in 2023) and proved that disparate UAS teams can come together and accomplish some big things post-disaster.

We are especially proud of our EMHS students that were involved. From working in the field, to staffing a Remote Sensing Cell and an Air Operations Branch - these students learned what it takes to coordinate the missions, information, and data that drive a modern disaster response. When Florida gets its next disaster, these students and the Disaster Intelligence Analysis Lab (DIAL) will be ready to support SERT with the same capabilities.

This week, EMHS students took part in the 2026 Florida Statewide Exercise - Operation Ready Florida, hosted at the new State Emergency Operations Center. Students assisted state officials and received training in SimCell and Air Operations.

EMHS prides itself on being able to offer such practical, formative experiences to students. It's one of many ways we translate classroom knowledge into real life.

Almost a month ago exactly, the EMHS team of faculty, staff, and four amazing students made our way to Washington DC for the National Emergency Management Association Mid-Year Forum!

Our relationship with NEMA, the professional association for State Directors of EM, is one our most cherished at EMHS. We are so thankful that NEMA continues to provide this stellar opportunity for our students. It is one that only a handful of people can say they've experienced, and we know contributes tremendously to our students' professional development.

An additional thank you to the many people who took the time to speak with our students, including former FEMA Administrator, Deanne Criswell; Executive Director of the FL Division of EM, Kevin Guthrie (pictured in top photo); and so many more.

PS, is it too much of a brag to mention we also got one day of snow!?!?! Snow!! 😱

Still working out the details of your fall semester? Sign up for our newly added Disaster Incident Management (DIM) course! This course is listed as DSC 4781 (Section 6) and PAD 5935 (Section 20), and will meet Mondays 5:30-8:15pm.

We have some very exciting opportunities planned for students, and this course will make sure you’re well positioned to make the best of these unique experiences. Part classroom and part lab, DIM students will take part in real EM projects and events as part of an Incident Support Team (IST).

Walton County EM Director Jeff Goldberg and the Walton County Sheriff's Office recently honored our Disaster Intelligence Analysis Laboratory (DIAL) students by recognizing their outstanding work in support of an active criminal case in Walton County.

Through detailed research and analysis, DIAL students were able to identify social media profiles connected to a registered s*x offender in Walton County, who failed to properly register certain information as required by law. Their findings provided critical leads that support local law enforcement action and resulted in warrants being issued.

This is why their work matters. These students are not completing hypothetical classroom exercises. They are producing real intelligence that supports active investigations, strengthens public safety efforts, and helps protect our residents and visitors. Their diligence, professionalism, and attention to detail directly contributed to accountability in our community.

This collaboration represents years of trust, mentorship, and shared investment in strengthening emergency management across Florida. Walton County EM staff has had the opportunity to present to various courses in the EMHS Program, and has hosted multiple interns who've gone on to serve in EM and public safety roles. Investing in students today is investing in the future of our profession.

On behalf of our agencies and the community we serve, we're grateful to the students and faculty whose innovation, talent, and partnership have made a direct and measurable impact.
