It has officially been a week since we wrapped up our Hurricane Isaias activation and the EMHS team is still beaming with pride seeing all that our students accomplished. And all they work they are still doing! We might be back to our regularly scheduled tasking for the most part, but our GIS students are still processing data collected by the UAS team (which also included students!). So there's your glimpse into some of the behind the scenes work the public doesn't get to see much 🙂‍↕️

Whether in the field or at a computer, our DIAL students all contributed to a successful activation. This kind of hands on, real world experience is invaluable to students, while also making an immediate difference in their communities.

Isaias (pronounced ees-ah-EE-ahs) just became the latest-forming first hurricane of the Atlantic storm season since reliable records began. The previous record was set in 1905!

While landfall is projected to be west of Tallahassee, we will still see impacts here. There's already plenty of resources out there to help you prepare (floridadisaster.org, to name just one), but we want to take a moment to remind you to be a good neighbor. Help those around you whenever possible. Check in on your loved ones and make sure they're prepared too.

At EMHS, we are working hard to support agencies as they prepare and respond. Our applied experiences allow students to use their academic knowledge in real-world challenges, all while making an immediate difference in our communities.

Our Disaster Intelligence Analysis Laboratory (DIAL) students are using Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) to support decision makers, distributing multiple daily reports to County and State agencies. Some students have also been working alongside faculty, staff, and alumni in the Air Operations Branch of the State Emergency Operations Center. Other students are preparing to assist in post-landfall mapping and damage assessments using unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).

EMHS is proud of all our students and alumni! Their work is making a difference.

Next week we'll be hosting two exceptional guest speakers who will discuss internships and careers in EM and intelligence!

Bryan Koon, President and CEO of IEM and former Director of the FL Division of Emergency Management, will join us October 13.

Richard Crusan, Deputy Chief of Public Affairs and Chief of Strategic Communication and Plans at US Southern Command, will join us October 15.

We've made it through the first two weeks of our brand new Bachelor's of Science in Emergency Management and Intelligence Studies, but we're keeping the party going all semester long 🎉

To celebrate this new era in EMHS, we are hosting a Fall Lecture Series and the first one is this Thursday, September 10! Join us In HCB 0316 at 3pm to hear Lieutenant Colonel Joshua G. Franqui present "Decoding the Shadows: The Military Intelligence Enterprise and the Power of OSINT," followed by a Q&A!

The Fall 2026 football season is just getting underway, and we've already had a promising start for both the EMHS-DIAL team and Noles football! We were there for every moment of the win against New Mexico State.

EMHS faculty, staff, and students spent the day supporting FSU Emergency Management and Police during the home game. The team of Disaster Intelligence Analysis Lab (DIAL) students collaborated to provide real-time information to our partners. Together, our efforts helped achieve comprehensive situational awareness, which ultimately contributes to a safer environment for all in attendance.

And we're ready to do it all again later today for the game against Southern Methodist University. Be sure to wave when you see our drones in the sky ☺️ 👋

The Disaster Intelligence Analysis Laboratory (DIAL) at Florida State University is now accepting applications for its Fall 2026 internship cohort. Operated through the Emergency Management and Homeland Security (EMHS) program, DIAL provides students with hands-on experience using Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques to conduct intelligence analysis and create reports for stakeholders.
The lab operates as a fusion center within FSU’s Bellamy Building, offering students practical experience in intelligence operations, live monitoring, and analytical reporting.
This is an unpaid internship requiring 15–20 volunteer hours per week, in person, for a minimum of two semesters beginning Fall 2026. Applicants must be current students with availability in both the fall and spring terms.
Applications are due September 2, 2026, at noon. Interviews will be conducted in person on the week of September 7th.
Applicants must submit a resume and cover letter in PDF format. Incomplete applications or failure to follow instructions on the application will result in disqualification.

Welcome to Fall 2026, the inaugural semester of the Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management and Intelligence Studies (EM/IS).

Fall 2026 marks the start of a new, exciting era, and not just for EMHS-FSU. We know our EM/IS students will go on to do incredible things in their communities, in Florida and beyond. And that's what this is all about: making the world a better, safer place for all. We can't wait to see where it leads us.

As always, we are so thankful to everyone who played a role in helping us get here. To the many students we've had over the years, every professional partnership, and the variety of FSU offices that have supported us during this process: thank you. Now let's get to work 😅

The EMHS Program is the proud winner of the Florida Division of Emergency Management’s Campus Impact Award, which was presented at the Second Annual Florida Training for Emergency Management Awards Gala.

This award recognizes educators and university programs in the field of emergency management or homeland security whose accomplishments have benefitted their community while helping students find meaningful career paths.

It is a true honor to receive this award. We are incredibly proud, and so thankful for all the students, faculty, staff, and other partners who have contributed to our success. All of this is to build a safer, stronger community in Florida and beyond. We know our students will go on to do just that. Go Noles! ❤️

CURSE26 is in the books! Catastrophic Unmanned Remote Sensing Exercise 2026 was a success. Last week, twenty UAS teams from around the state (and beyond) spent a day collecting imagery and delivering geospatial products in response to a simulated disaster. Local and state agencies, backed up by NGOs and community partners, flew mapping, reconnaissance, and damage assessment missions and pushed imagery back to Tallahassee in near real time. This was the largest CURSE exercise to date (we started the series in 2023) and proved that disparate UAS teams can come together and accomplish some big things post-disaster.

We are especially proud of our EMHS students that were involved. From working in the field, to staffing a Remote Sensing Cell and an Air Operations Branch - these students learned what it takes to coordinate the missions, information, and data that drive a modern disaster response. When Florida gets its next disaster, these students and the Disaster Intelligence Analysis Lab (DIAL) will be ready to support SERT with the same capabilities.

DIAL Application Deadline Extended!

The Disaster Intelligence Analysis Laboratory (DIAL) is now accepting applications for its Summer/Fall 2026 internship cohort. DIAL provides students with hands-on experience using Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques to conduct intelligence analysis and create reports for stakeholders.
