Hosted by Kravet, Inc., students in our Materials and Methods course designed an original textile pattern with detailed specifications for Kravet Design of Distinction competition. Submissions included both 2D pattern graphics and 3D renderings applied to upholstery from the Kravet line, using a range of media from hand-blocked textiles to digital patterns and videos. Entries were reviewed by the Materials and Methods instructors and the Kravet Design Grads program, which selected the winning designs.

Today, School of Design faculty, advisors, and students came together for our annual Mass Meeting to kick off the new academic year!

Afterward, students picked up their School of Design T-shirts, enjoyed some ice cream, and spent time connecting with classmates and faculty.

We’re excited to have everyone back and can’t wait for the year ahead!

Designing for Health, Wellness, and Impact

The School of Design's Health & Wellness Design Studio launched the semester with an engaging panel discussion featuring healthcare design professionals:

• Kailey Chasteen, NCIDQ, WELL AP, IIDA, ASID, LEED Green Associate, Health Interior Designer II at HKS (FSU alum)

• Sarah Boyne, Associate Interior Designer at Gresham Smith and Interior Design Magazine's Top 30 Under 30 honoree

• Lakiesha Stanley, NCIDQ, IIDA, Associate at Gresham Smith and Charlotte Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree

Taught by Dr. Daejin Kim and Dr. Amy Huber, the Health & Wellness Design Studio connects students directly with leading professionals shaping the future of healthcare environments.

Our panelists shared their unique paths into healthcare design, with backgrounds spanning nursing, residential design, and retail design. Students learned how research, technology, AI, and user-centered design are transforming healthcare spaces and improving outcomes for patients, families, and caregivers.

The panel also offered invaluable career advice, encouraging students to pursue professional credentials such as LEED, WELL, and NCIDQ, apply broadly for opportunities, remain open to unexpected career paths, and continue building portfolios that reflect their passions.

A sincere thank you to Kailey, Sarah, and Lakiesha for investing in our students and helping inspire the next generation of healthcare designers.

We’re wrapping up our Internship Spotlight series with students from our First Professional graduate program’s internship course, guided by Prof. Yelena McLane!

This summer, these students gained hands-on experience with firms and organizations across the design industry, applying their developing skills in professional settings and gaining valuable perspectives on design practice.

Each location represents a new opportunity for learning, growth, and advancement in the profession. Exciting update about our department! 

In August 2026, the Department of Interior Architecture & Design will officially become the School of Design, reflecting a broader vision for how design is taught, practiced, and applied across disciplines.

At the center of this change is the launch of a new Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Design and the continuation of a Graduate Certificate in Graphic Design.

While the School of Design introduces new academic pathways, our nationally recognized interior design programs will continue to build on their long-standing rigor and excellence, carrying forward a legacy that has shaped design education for more than five decades.

The launch of the School of Design is an expansion of our mission to help students build bright futures in design, shaping the spaces and objects that surround us.

This May, Design and Art History students traveled to the Ringling Museum for the biannual Summer Intensive Program, an immersive experience exploring design history, architecture, museum practices, and historic preservation led by Yelena McLane, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the School of Design.

Over several days, students learned from leading curators, educators, architects, and conservation professionals while touring the Ringling’s iconic Ca’ d’Zan mansion, the Museum of Art, conservation labs, and world-renowned circus collections. They also explored Sarasota’s celebrated modernist architecture and concluded the program with a visit to the Museum of the American Arts & Crafts Movement.

Students gained firsthand insight into the stories, craftsmanship, and preservation of some of Florida’s most significant cultural landmarks. Thank you to our incredible partners at the Ringling for another inspiring Summer Intensive!
