“Bilingualism, Language Contact, and Question Marking: Evidence from Quechua and Spanish”

About the Presentation:
Bilingual speakers often navigate linguistic systems that differ in how information is packaged and communicated. This talk examines how language contact influences question marking in Quechua and Spanish, two languages that rely on different cues to distinguish questions from statements. In the first part of the talk, we present production data from Quechua-Spanish bilinguals in Peru and Argentina, showing how long-term contact has influenced the two languages. In the second part, we introduce a perception study that investigates how bilingual listeners process questions and statements in real time, providing insights into bilingual language processing and change.

Tom McCarthy visits FSU on Monday, November 2. McCarthy has been shortlisted twice for the Booker Prize (C, Satin Island) and is the author of Remainder, The Making of Incarnation, and the essay collection Typewriters, Bombs, Jellyfish. He will read from his new novel, The Rhyl Poster, which follows a jurist at one of Europe’s highest courts who becomes a double agent. McCarthy described this novel as a combination of Crime and Punishment and Grand Theft Auto (excellent). Check out the New York Times review here.

From wandering Ukrainian vampires to Romanian revenants, discover the stories that inspired centuries of fascination with the undead. 🦇

In this special Halloween-season event, the FSU Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics' Robert Romanchuk will explore the world of Ukrainian upyrs and the remarkable legends of eighteenth-century vampires.

Vincent Joos, also a faculty member in the department, will examine how Dracula became a global icon, contrasting Dracula's myth with Romania's traditions of the moroi and strigoi.

Exploring the Lemberg Machine

The Globe Auditorium

You are invited to a screening of Dana Kavelina's film The Lemberg Machine, which uses stop-motion animation to tell the moving story of how the city of L'viv in western Ukraine remembers WWII. The screening will be followed by a brief documentary, Inside the Lemberg Machine, directed by Dr. Dragan Kujundzic of the Bud Shorstein Center for Jewish Studes at the University of Florida. Dr. Kujundzic will introduce both films and lead a Q&A following the screenings.

Join us for a special global screening of Páramos II: The Origin, an award-winning documentary that explores one of the most extraordinary and vulnerable ecosystems on Earth.
The páramo is among the world's most important ecosystems for freshwater conservation. Often described as "water factories," páramos provide clean water to millions of people while harboring exceptional biodiversity and some of the highest levels of endemism found anywhere on the planet. Yet they are also among the most threatened ecosystems, facing pressures from climate change, land-use transformation, and resource extraction.
Through breathtaking images and compelling stories, Páramos II: The Origin examines the past, present, and future of these unique landscapes and highlights their vital role in sustaining both nature and human communities.

FSU Libraries and the FSU Museum of Fine Arts (MoFA) are pleased to present the Interdisciplinary Arts & Humanities Symposium, held in conjunction with MoFA's current exhibition Friendly Arbitration: Honoré Daumier on Crime, Justice, and Punishment. This two-day event explores the history, culture, and significance of print media through scholarship, collections, artistic practice, and public engagement.

On October 14th, join faculty from across FSU's Arts and Humanities departments in the Bradley Reading Room in Strozier Library for an interdisciplinary symposium highlighting research on print culture from a range of perspectives (including a talk given by our own Dr. Michelle Bumatay). Then, on October 15th, explore the Daumier exhibition at MoFA for yourself and experience the printmaking process through hands-on activities with Art in the Library.

The event ends with a public reception open to all at MoFA, from 5-7pm on Thursday, October 15th.
