In honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Sustainable Campus and the Florida State University Libraries team partnered to create Earth Day 50: Environmental Activism at FSU and Beyond, a completely online exhibit that looks back at past Earth Day celebrations at FSU, how FSU students, faculty, and alumni have shaped the environmental movement, and how far we've come in 50 years in our community and our state. Although the exhibit was originally set to open in Strozier Library this month, thanks to the amazing FSU Libraries team, we are able to share it online for all.

The Earth Day 50 exhibit features exclusive archival materials that have recently been digitized. Feel free to explore the exhibit in order or click through the parts that you are especially interested in. We hope Earth Day 50 gives our FSU community a chance to celebrate how far we've come and get inspired for the progress we can continue to make for our world.

🌍Sin of Lesser of Two Evils🌎 Companies will sometimes make a claim that may be true within the product category but that may distract the consumer from the greater environmental impacts of the category as a whole. For example, environmental qualifiers like "organic" or "green" are placed on products, such as insecticides and herbicides in which the entire product category is of questionable environmental value. Commercial insecticides and herbicides are needed for some agricultural applications, in which case, choosing the greenest option is essential, but insecticides and pesticides may be unnecessary for many cosmetic applications, such as lawns.

🌎Sin of Irrelevance🌍 Companies can may make claims that are irrelevant, such as “CFC-free,” which is completely irrelevant because CFCs are banned and thus no products contain CFCs.

🌍Sin of Worshiping False Labels🌎 Some products feature false certifications or labels to mislead consumers into thinking the claim is legitimate. For example, a product may hold the label “Certified Eco-friendly,” but this is a false certification that they made up and holds no weight. Some credible labels include Forest Stewardship Council Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, and WaterSense. You can find more legitimate labels here: https://www.mnn.com/money/sustainable-business-practices/stories/green-product-certification-21-symbols-you-should
